I am fairly new to casting, and have focused primarily on bulk pistol bullets so far.
I just got an NOE 300gr gas check HP mold to use in my 35 Whelen. My primary purpose for it is to develop a hunting bullet as a backup for the next time I can't find component jacketed bullets. It's my primary hunting rifle here in Alaska.
I'd like to get it up around 2200fps.
My question is what hardness to shoot for? I've read through many pages on here, and have found answers anywhere from 11BHN to 30...
Expansion is moderately important to me, but we have toothy critters up here, so I need something that won't break up or totally pancake on impact.
Initial thoughts was to go middle of the road around 14, but figured I'd ask here before I start wasting my lead supply. I have pure or nearly pure lead, linotype, and 50/50 solder for a tin source to make the alloy.
Thanks for any pointers!
