    Eastwood powder coat question

Hi guys. I've just started down the powder coating rabbit hole. I bought 2 types. One was from Princess Auto (Canada's answer to Harbor Freight) and 1 Eastwood powder that was one of the most expensive ones my local tool store had. The stuff from Princess Auto worked absolutely amazing. Super easy to get it to stick. The Eastwood stuff on the other hand is just not working. Yes, I've tried preheating to various temperatures, adding airsoft BBs. I thought I'd try my vibratory tumbler, but that didn't work either. The container I'm using is the exact same container that I applied the Princess Auto stuff in and the Princess stuff went on like a dream with 20 seconds of shaking and no BBs. This particular Eastwood powder just doesn't stick, and that's that. The product number is 10098LB. It's a polyester TGIC powder.

So why not just buy the stuff from Princess Auto you ask. If I'd gotten into this 2 months ago I would. Fate would have it that they have decided to stop carrying it, and there's no replacement coming in. They're out of the powder coat business and there's nothing left in my city. Most other stores in other cities are completely sold out as well.

So that leaves me with local access to Eastwood powders only. Just so I don't go and buy another pound of something that's useless, could you guys please have a look at the actual product code/number on the stuff you're using, and you know works, and let me know what it is. It's the number on the label that's at the bottom left corner of the barcode. Thanks guys.

And I completely missed the entire section on powder coating. Sorry to the mods. You'll have to move it there for me.

Not all Eastwood powders work, have had great success with "Ford Blue".

What color? I just started pc'ing last month myself. Purchased Eastwood black from Amazon. Good but not perfect results so far, getting some splotchy areas. But even there it seems the surface is coated because I can't scratch it. Will be buying the sample pack from Smoke next.

I also bought black Eastwood Powder from amazon with the same results you describe. I have been mixing some ford blue with the black, seems to improve the coverage. Just trying to use it up.

The Ford blue and silver both work well. Ford blue with a dash of silver looks nice.

To the OP, if my Dad found something he liked he bought a all he could. He always said if it worked they would quit making it.

I too have had success with the Princess Auto blue. I had no idea they were no longer carrying it. I’ll have to see if there is any left locally.

We’re you using PA blue? I never tried other colours.

I’ve also had very good success with ‘Ford Blue’.

The stuff I got is red. As it turn out, it was the second last can they had in the city of Edmonton. I went back the next morning to buy the last one but it was gone. Id give you the sku number for it, but it won't do you any good for checking inventory. It's already been removed from their website.

Unfortunately, the Ford blue stuff isn't available through my local retailer. They only carry a partial selection of what Eastwood offers. That's why I'm hoping some guys can check the actual part number of what they've found works so I can check it against what my local supplier has. I don't really care about what color it is, just as long as it works.

Here's a list of what I have available through my local supplier. Even most of these have to be ordered online through their main DC. If the letters "LB" appear after the part number, it just means it's a 1lb container, not a different powder. Are any of you guys using any of these with success ?

    16304 - Signal red
    10161 - Mirror black
    10089 - Translucent blue
    10150 - Medium green
    10092 - Translucent red
    10213 - Silver vein
    10211 - Copper vein
    10092 - Translucent red
    10291 - Mirror blue
    10163 - Gold
    10152 - Machine grey
    16306 - Gloss white
    16307 - High gloss black
10098 - Orange (this is the stuff I bought and it doesn't work)
    10093 - High gloss clear
    10096 - Bright yellow
    10149 - Lime green
    10286 - Super gloss clear

There's others that are special order, which in Canada usually translates to "It's going to be stupidly expensive. We can order it, but we can't tell you when it'll come, maybe never."

I use Eastwood, direct from them. The gloss black must be dry/dry so storage must be in an air tight container and the air soft pellets should be the black. I do only the shake and bake, with nose down in a hardware cloth box, no gas checks. For the AR indo a bake and recoat for a double coat, run to 2,500 fps.

Why not ? Shipping and taxes. I'm in Canada, and they fleece us on everything. I just bought a mold from NOE. It was right around $125 USD. My final cost by the time it will be in my hands will be right around $230 CDN.

Although there's a "free trade" agreement between Canada and the US, it is far from "free". LOL. If I can buy something local, it's usually substantially cheaper. That said, living in Edmonton Alberta Canada is sometimes like living on the moon when you're looking for things. You guys south of the border have it made compared to us when it comes to choices. For gun stuff, it was bad before. Now...good lord. We haven't seen primers come in here in forever. People are listing primers on buy and sell sites for $500-700 per 1000. I don't know if anyone is paying that, but there's nothing available any cheaper. We got 12 lever action rifles in at my local gun store about 6 months ago. Those were the first ones in 2 years, and who knows when the next ones will come in. They were gone in one day. Used Winchester 94's are being listed for $1500 and up...and by up, I mean up to $3000 in some instances. You've got to be determined, resourceful, and maybe just a little bit insane to be in the shooting hobby here right now.

I looked at Eastwood and Prismatic for on-line choices when my local source went dry. Have you checked to see if Prismatic is available? If so, one of the two I tried worked real good and was reasonable for cost. RAL-4005 purple goes on fast and easy with good coverage using ASBB shake & bake. If you have something else that does not work as well, you can mix some of it in with the RAL-4005 to use it up. https://www.prismaticpowders.com/sho...-4005/ral-4005

From this thread (https://castboolits.gunloads.com/sho...powders-don-t), post 275 reports on 4 Prismatic colors that worked.

In another previous thread I found:

For the above, I found https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqD8CcnzBOA

I have been disappointed in that a lot of PC users seem to find stuff that works good but do not bother to share the details (source, product number, price, method used, ease of use, coverage, etc.) of their results. If you find some good choices, adding a post to the thread I linked above would be helpful.

The only retailer I know of here in the city that carries powder coat only has Eastwood stuff. There are a few industrial supply places, but they're usually vastly more expensive. That said, I plan on widening my search next week. Here's a shipping quote to my address from Prismatic. It only triples the price, and don't forget to add tax, currency conversion, and brokerage fees on top of that. Sometimes, I think it would be cheaper to buy stuff inside a US prison than it is to get it landed in Canada.

I hear you on your resistance to paying more for shipping than for product.

Well at least I found you a link to a video source for some Eastwood choices that should work.

From the video I pulled some info & sorted those that were full recommended vs not into groups:

    Full recommended Eastwood Powders:

    Full Gloss Clear: http://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powde...
    Orange: http://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powde...
    Mirror Red: http://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powde...
    Lime Green: http://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powde...
    Ford Light Blue: http://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powde...
    Ford Dark Blue: http://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powde...
    Rally Wheel Silver: http://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powde...
    Copper Penny: http://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-copp...

    Less than full recommendation:

    Mirror Black: http://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powde...
    Bright Yellow: http://www.eastwood.com/10096-hotcoat...
    Single Stage Reflective Chrome: http://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powde...
    Atomic Pink: http://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-atom...
    Gloss White: http://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powde...

The links did not copy over good, but they do work if you go to the video.

I've had really good luck with quick and easy shake coating (no BBs, just boolits and a teaspoon of powder) with these Eastwood powders:

    # 16250 HOTCOAT POWDER SQUIRREL GRAY
    # 10145 HOTCOAT POWDER FORD LIGHT BLUE

I haven't done a lot of powder coating yet.
What I have done is with the Eastwood powders.
Once I run out of that I will certainly Try Smokes powders.
I'm still trying to shoot up all my tumble lubed boolits I have.

From Eastwood ,I have used JD green and a dark blue that cover well. Copper Penny, not so much. The green and blue cover well, in under a minute of shaking. My Traffic Purple came from Smoke4320 and also works well. Bacon Grease is OK and also came from Smoke.
