Well now that's an interesting take. That certainly seems plausible given everything we know. Thank you!

what ever it is they were not very popular cuz no one has seen one before or knows what it is. it could be some very specialized apparatus for something or other.
might be a good thing to take to antiques road show
I like that show. They don't get things wrong very often.
A funny one they dropped the ball on was some pottery jar/pot thing.
They called it as some rare antique worth quite a bit.
The a lady came forward somewhere with a picture, and said she'd made it in High School in a pottery class.

Has anybody done an image search on google? I am not all that computer literate, but I know (or at least think) that there may be other pictures of these things floating around the internet.

I've done the google image thing once, years ago. Didn't have any luck. Frankly, I not only forgot to try it, I don't even remember how. haha

I ran across those in my searching.
I discounted them since the minimum number of holes I saw was seven.
There's different things molded to the shape shown,
and plenty of Iron, Alum. and even food grade plastic molds you can bake in,
but the headscratcher is why only two cavities. And why the two little cavities?

They didn't show the pan ... they didn't show any pan at all ...
what did they cook the ones in the photo in ?
I'm not 100% convinced it's a aebleskiver pan ... not just yet ...
but ... I sorta think it might be some kind of cooking utensil ...
It's not 1/2 of any mould ... what we see is all there is .

The pans are all over ebay and Amazon.
Some are made like cast Iron frying pans with the compartments, others are more like a cookie sheet.
Depending on what you're making, the cast ones could go on top of the stove or in a oven.
The sheet pan ones are more for cakes going in the oven.
The head scratcher for me is that it only has two compartments for each size.
They advertise them as molds for soap, chocolate goodies, breads & buns, and even frying eggs.

I'm very sure it's not an Ableskiver unit. I've got one, and the holes are almost racquet ball size. Plus, there's seven cavities.
Making them this small and only two at a time would be an arduous task. And still again, the two little ones would be too small to be useful.
Thanks again fellas!
Aha... They didn't know what it was used for either ...
What puzzles me is the two very different sized cavities and the number of cavities ...
Two rather big ones and two extra small ones ... I just can't think why or what you would cook in this contraption .
I can tell you it is not used in Cajun or Creole cooking in South Louisiana . Maybe some of the German Settlers decendants from around Des Allemands ( The German Coast) would have some idea of what this thing is .

My Mom's family is all descended from the German pioneers that settled in the Texas Hill Country.
They were all about old world cooking, and I never saw or even heard of anything like that.
My Dad's family came to Northern Virginia during the Irish potato famine around 1845.
A little before the Civil War, when the farm land 'wore out', they moved and settled in Mississippi.
There was never anything even close to that in their culture either.

came across some information and I think your mould is actually a gold assay prill mould. there are several modern designs but the one you have seems quite old
Ohhh, most excellent. Thank you VERY much!!
Honestly, I don't know that term, I had to look it up. So I appreciate the education!
A Gold Assay Prill Mould ! Why of course ... I should have known .
I had to look up the word prill and still not sure what a prill is but I'm going with Prill Mould anyway ...
Thanks for the I.D. farmbif
Now we know and can lay another "whatizzit" to rest !

A friend of mine was a Doctor in S. Africa. A local came in with an infected cut. The Dr. prescribed antibiotics that should have cleared the infection in couple of days. A week later the local came in and the infection was worse than ever.
The Dr. asked "Did you get the antibiotics?" the local replies, "yes, I put them in a bag and wore them as a necklace for the past week. They did nothing..." . The vial was still full....
Go now and pour yourself a hot one...
