    Mauser 98 project

Lcclower very generously gave me a 98 for use in a barelling and chambering class. fired it this week so I figure it's time for some pics
It's got 26 inches of green mtn bbl blank . I had to make and blend the muzzle brake for class but I'll most likely ditch the break for a recessed 11* crown right about 24 inches. I'm thinking a light hunting contour and custom walnut stock , but I may go heavier profile and drop it in a pro mag atch angel .
I've trued the action face , and bolt face ,lapped the bolt lugs and chambered it in 257 roberts ai.

    For a stock,
Look at Boyd's Mauser stock selection.
I bought two of the finished Mauser stocks.
I stripped the finish off and then did a little customization to them.
Like glass bedding them with a free floated barrel.
I added a ebony nose cap , a recoil pad and did some more work on areas like the cheek piece , the bolt release area and the ejection port.
When I refinished it with Tru Oil the wood looked far better than the factory finish.
The price on those stocks at the time was great and the quality and fit was very good.

I once built a Mauser in .257 Roberts on a Yugo 24/47 action.
The reason for the Yugo was because it is a shorter action.
I used a heavier barrel and the rifle shot very flat.
If I build another on one of my Yugos that I have , I will opt for the 257Roberts ai like you did.
They say it equals or shoots better than the two
25-06s that I built on the longer 98 actions.
But I still have a 25-06 that I built on a Yugo action.
But at the time , I did not opt for the 25-06 in the AI because of the shorter action.
    The 25-06 works great.
But the 25-06 A I with heavier Boolits like 120s are too long for the magazine on the Yugo.

I too chose an intermediate Yugo, for a 308 Project.. came out excellent (in Boyds Stock) May have a pic Someplace!!
Thinking of another in 284 Win. just because... Probably need to off some "other" Projects tho. Prices have escalated in the last 10-15 years!!!!

Looking good. Personally I would finish it at a sporter weight sans muzzle brake.
I've used the .250 Savage and 25-06 Remington for years, I'd be happy with the 257 Roberts for sure.

Anytime I see a project like this it brings me back to my youth. Many pro and shade tree gunsmiths started on a ‘98 sportier. Definitely keep us up on your progress.

Thats awesome and I mean it. Sadly folk that want to try build a rifle or mess with some ideas do not have the availibilties a lot of us had years ago. How about a savage nut on barrel and more barrels as the itch comes to try another cartridge?

Great idea... the Nut is available from Rhineland...last I knew. Very foolproof with the large ring action!!!

While you are doing it, take a look at the sticky, "Joni Lynn's Mauser". Take a look at truing the action for your best scope base mounting.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.
John Taylor - "African Rifles and Cartridges"

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!

    I like it!!!

I just built a 444-06 on a 93 action and put it in a Boyds laminate stock in the color they call nutmeg. I like the Boyds stock. The fit was almost perfect. There is just a little gap at the front of the tang where they inlet for swede actions but I can live with that.
