Something I left out.
You don’t get a full sized rim on the reformed case but there is enough to headspace on.
I never did figure out why they didn’t like to eject out of a 29 smith but they seemed to get tight in the ratchet.

Facta non verba
Well, I reformed 1 case. It was too much for my lee challenger press. Guess the project is on hold until I get a beefier press. Federal case and lots of imperial sizing wax.
Remington cases might do easier but, They are thinner too and I think I need all the thickness I can get. My idea of using small primer of course won’t work with Remington cases. Federal is the main source there.
Long ago, I did make some 44's out of 45 ACP. Made up at least 25, shot them in a Charter .44 , worked OK, no problems with the Lee 44-215-SWC(?) then I found some 44 Mag and cut them down. 44 Special brass was pretty hard to find, probably in the 70's. I still have them, finally found 44 Special brass so the 44/45 and shortened 44 Mag are at the bottom of the 44 Special box.
I just had an idea. Small primer brass based on the 30-06. Dunno what calibers use that. But then I could cut it off, ram it into the 44 die, and hand small primer 44 special cases of correct length and suitable thickness I bet. Just got to watch the case capacity.
Why do want small primer for 44 Special?. If it is for flexibility, having small primers, not large ones, kind of makes sense? Not sure what is to be gained in performance. I've seen small primer 308 and have small primer 6.5 Creedmoor and small primer 45 ACP, never seen or heard of small primer 30-06. Long ago, long 44's were made by trimming 30-40 and 303 Brit, no small primers though. At one time, primer pocket inserts were available to reduce large primer pockets to small, mostly for the .454 Casull, I think Buffalo Bore loads small primer 45-70, to avoid magazine accidents in the Marlin 1895 with very hard cast bullets.
Why would you want to use 45 ACP to make 44 short?
What case length is this 44 short?
In what kind of chamber or pistol is it intended to be used?
Why not shorten a 44 Special? That is how I made 44 Russian cases back in the early sixties when I could not find enough original, balloon head, REM-UMC 44 Russian cases.
I think mostly because you can. To try new things and have some fun.
I just mess with it for fun. Ya learn stuff. Now sure... I guess I could watch a couple episodes of tv and pass the time instead.
I want small primer 44 special just for the flexibility thing. I had recently a brick of small rifle Primers. I didn’t have any use for them. I finally traded them to large pistol.

I’m on hold anyways until i get a better press. My cast aluminum lee won’t do it.

When I was a Kid. Early 1960's, We just cut down .44Spl to make .44Russian brass. We had to cut down & reform every kind of brass there was to make cases to shoot every kind of rifle. Just cutting down the 44's and then .45Colt to make cases for the #3 Schofield (not that, that worked well.) Besides all the commercial brass was Match brass for Dad's target loads.
I HATE auto-correct
Happiness is a Warm GUN & more ammo to shoot in it.
My Experience and My Opinion, are just that, Mine.
