So I let a friend borrow my Krag 1898 to shoot a couple shots. He handed it back to me and the safety was gone! I understand that these are hard to find. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Check your Pm's I sent you a message about a parts dealer I know.
Grandpa's Gun Parts has lots of Krag parts.
Begs the question: Why did the first safety disappear? They don't just fall out!
I thought the same thing- how did he lose the safety?
THEN, yesterday I was shooting my Krag with Remington factory loads.... more recoil than my handloads..... on the second shot the safety flew out and hit me in the eye! No injury but my eye watered for a bit.
Thank God for protecting this idiot who wasn't wearing eye protection! What a reminder!
The safety lever was found on the ground 5 feet behind the bench, intact with plunger. It went back in correctly and operates correctly.
Why it popped out - I have no idea- but maybe the 122 year old spring on the detent is the culprit.

Your Guardian Angel must have been present, that's for sure. I've never had one come out, but it is true that they're very hard to come by. Last time I was building a Krag I needed that part and it took a month of repeated visits to e-bay to find it. The cost was outrageous.
Apparently the safety flying out during firing wasn't a common enough problem to merit discussion by Hatcher or Whelan, but as an owner and shooter of Krags I find it concerning. Just pulling on the safeties on my rifles in the "off safe" position won't make them come out, so I wonder if your assessment of an old, tired spring, or perhaps crud in the detent, might be a good guess. I'd certainly take another look at it before firing again. And-- I'll certainly start wearing my shooting glasses!

Glad to hear you were not hurt and were able to find the safety.
I was using my krag to show some kids how easy the gun was as to shoot.
My friend was completely enamored by the history of these guns and how they well they shoot. So I gave him a box of shells and left him to it. After three shots he noted the safety missing.
The area around camp was rather tall grass so it used a great quality metal detector several times in the area he was standing with no luck in finding it.
My father who originally owned the gun told me to just retire it to a wall hanger. I just can’t seem to do that.
I'd still use it without the safety, just chamber a round when ready to fire. I'd keep an eye on ebay for Krag parts, a safety may be lurking with other parts. Good luck. Krags are for shooting.
