Savage axis?

I have 2. One in 22-250 and the other 308. Both shoot great.

Best buy for the money. If there is any problems, Savage takes care of it, fast.

Have 2 Savage Axis . 223 & 6.5 Creedmoor. The 223 is a 1/2" gun. The 6.5 is 1 1/4" average hunting gun, handloads & Hornady factory ammo @ 100 yards. Both light weight slim barrels. The 223 has old 6 lb trigger.

Both came with 3x9 Bushnells. Base was loose on the 223. Fixed it. Others wise, as they came from factory.

My Walmart special (Axis II XP, .223 heavy barrel, 4-12 scope) was what got me really interested in rifles again, especially the 600yd range. It was very consistent at less than 1/2MOA with the right loads. That barrel was 'retired' with over 4000 rounds on it, still producing 1/2" groups.

It now has a .308 barrel (from a Savage 12BVSS) that I use for cast bullets. Boyd's Pro Varmint stock (bedded and pillared) and a better scope.

Works well enough I am looking through the local shops for another one to build on.

I too have a pair of Axis's rifles, 223 and 6.5 Creed, both very accurate.
Mine both wear Vortex glass, the 223 had a very heavy trigger, but with a little work.
I now have it down in the 2-3 lb. pull area.

Several years ago, my Son won a .223 Axis rifle/scope package @ a game dinner raffle ($20).

We both shot it, only to discover that it shot lights out, even with the cheapo scope that Savage was including in the package at the time.

He has regularly used it on predators, w/o any issues over the years.

Well worth the cost...

Same here.... Son has an Axis (non-accutrigger) in 7-08 and it's lights out right out of the box. I did put a MCarbo trigger kit in it, and it's sub-moa all day long with everything we've ever fed it. I did put decent Leupold glass on it (used VXIII)...why not for the $250 we have in the rifle? It shoots dangerously close to my Tikka with Zeiss glass. Hurts my feelings a little bit....I won't lie!

I have one in .223, ans I don't have any complaints about it. Read somewhere where some shooters don't care for the synthetic stock, as it flexes, but I haven't noticed anything like that

I have an original axis in 308, the stocks were quite flexable, just pulling the trigger on a sled would change your sight picture some. A Boyds stock shrank my groups from 1.5 inches at 100 down to .75.

Triggers are easy to tune, box mags work well, reliable, accurate.

Im not sure if this falls under Nikon Prostaff or the Axis, but 2 Nikon scopes died on this rifle. It has a Vortex Vanquish now and doing well.

Tempering the above: It is exceptionally finicky on feeding from the internal magazine. Both cast boolits and swaged bullets (swaged from 22LR weighing 60 grains) have a tendency to hang up as the bullet enters the chamber. A FAST & HARD cycling of the bolt will usually feed; a slow and methodical bolt cycling can often fail to feed.

We sell dozens of Axis rifles a year at my side job shop and people come in asking for it by name. My lone gripe is that the .223 version should use AR mags instead of the overpriced and chintzy OEM mags.

I found the stock to be very flexible and it need relieved in several places where the stock touched the barrel after doing that it was a 3/4”- 7/8” at 100 with factory Rem corelok 100 gr. After finding a handload it liked with Nosler 90 gr. Ballistic Tips it was a great shooter with some groups under 1/2”.

I have a "plain" Axis in 243. I think it's a great shooter, except as others point out, the factory plastic stock is too flexible.

Looking back at one of my "Old Posts" concerning the Axis .223; I was reminded that the Trigger Pull was Not Good when I bought it. If you have one that is real heavy - here is a Video link on how to reduce the trigger pull on the Savage Axis:

I'd love that. Heck, I'd like to see an industry wide standard on magazines of all types. For example, rifles should either have a blind mag or take AICS.

I just picked up a savage axis in .243. So far my impressions of it our favorable. I’ve only ran one box of factory ammo through it and I was impressed with the group size at 100 yards for a $400 gun. Bolt seems stiff but, I’m sure it will loosen up with use. The factory stock seems a little flimsy but, I’ve herd people say you can flex the butt stock. That is false I’m 6ft 4 260 former college football player and I can’t get it to flex side to side. The bolt surfaces are polished and smooth. Which I like a lot. The magazine is metal. Doesn’t seem like a lot of after market parts are available for the axis ( if your into that)

I also own a RAR rifle in .450 which, is also considered a budget gun. I would give the nod to the RAR. The American I think has the better factory stock. What I’m not a fan of is the surface finish on O.D. of the bolt. You can feel the feed lines on the bolt from the lathe. I could file my nails on it. I was the head hourly quality guy at a production machine shop and that surface finish drives me nuts. The RAR has a plastic magazine. Lots of after market parts available.

Over all I like my RAR American better. However, the axis is still a good gun. You wouldn’t be disappointed in it. Both guns fit me great. I would never tell some one not to buy the axis.

Both rifles have diamond back vortex scope installed.

I have one in 30-06. I shoot 3/4” groups factory all my hand loads. Washer bought one and 223 when I had the money! I bought a trigger kit from Mcarbo for $19 cut the trigger pull in half!

I have 2 of them in 308. Well I should say had 2. I gave one to a friend of mine because all he had at the time was an old 7mm magnum. He wanted something with less kick for hunting but couldn’t afford another rifle so I gave him one of my 308’s. Both rifles have Nikon scopes. We have taken them to a range in central Florida that has ranges out to 1000 yards. We have shot both of them to 500 yards and still get 1 moa out of both rifles easily. I really like the savage axis. Low price but highly accurate. Only thing I didn’t like was that it was picky on ammo at first. Took a while to break them in but now they will shoot anything I have tried.
