45-70 145 grain Button bullet in the Ruger Old Army

Anyone try this bullet in the Ruger Cap&Ball revolver? How did it work out?

Some years ago, Lee made a 172gn full wadcutter that fitted the ROA. Together with the current 250gn wadcutter, I used them both in competition to win 11 State Championships.

I have and used the LEE 220 grain bullet in it 40 years ago. It shot just fine but I had to glue a .225" high addition on to the top of the front sight. With out it, the revolver would shoot a mile high even with the rear sight in the lowest setting.

I was thinking the Collar Button bullet, being the same weight as the round ball, may shoot to the sights.

    You might try this one:

It's 150 gr and comes in a SIX cavity mold ($109+S&H). I do not work for the vendor but this might be a more economical slug to cast. I believe the collar button mold is a single cavity and last I checked was ~$80 if you could get one.

I cast the Accurate 45-180R for the Ruger Old Army, Using Pure Lead and sized .454.
Note: I ordered mine to cast .462 with Pb for multiple uses including 45/70. I also use a Star sizer to limit deformation when lubing/sizing.

    Hope this helps,

I have the Lyman collar button mold. I just don't like it in the 45-70 and thought before selling it, I might like it in the ROA but wanted to ask advice. I am hoping to hear from someone that has shot it in the ROA, wondering if it is a good choice for accuracy and if it is accurate, how far out does the short bullet hold up before it turns into a Frisbee.

I had a first try at loading and shooting the collar button bullet in the ROA. It was a failure in terms of loading into the cylinders centered up and square. I got them in but with the larger diameter bullet base (0.457"+) in the cylinders made to cut a lead ring off a round ball, the flat based Collar Button has no chance of going in straight. And they shot that way too!

If I get a chance in the future, sizing just the base band down may address the problem.
