Baseline Check - 405 or 425 WFNGC, Mild with 5744.

Thought it might be worth a new thread. Pulling back from a higher-pressure 425 grain load for the 45-70 GG, just wondering what you guys might think of the following. I have a new 425 Grain mold coming from Tom at Accurate (his 46-425Q - https://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet...bullet=46-425Q), but before getting another one (his 46-405M - https://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet...bullet=46-405M), wondered if I might get your thoughts.

Reduced loads, both using 1:40. Both, Starline brass. Both, WLR primers. Both, meplat .33. Both, northwoods deer round.

    425 grain

Same mold as above so it's gas checked, but I'd shoot it without the gas checks, unless that's ill advised in terms of accuracy. Input welcome). Between 25.6 and 28.5 grains Accurate 5400, for an estimated 1200-1350 FPS/14,500 - 16,200 psi.

    New mold, 405 Grain.

    Non-GC'ed. 24.5 - 27.0 gr 5400 for an estimated 1225 - 1390 fps/14,500 - 16,200 psi.

Still looking around for good low velocity powders, between what I'm learning here and what's available (or will be available at some point). Just as a starting point, here and elsewhere read good things about the 5400. Whatever the powder, a similar load in the trapdoor range as a milder use of my GG for deer.

I shoot the similar rcbs 45-405-FN in an Italian 1874 Sharps replica. Bullets drop at around 420 grains with my alloy. Both 5744 and IMR-4198 work well in 45-70 loads. I usually powder coat with Smoke's signal blue, but also swirl lube the PC'd bullets with 45-45-10. I have shot these both with and without the gas checks. I've found that the accuracy is much better with the checks on.

    OK, thanks.

I shoot a 515 gr FN pure lead in my guide gun with 27grs of 5744. Very accurate.
