Bucked out. He made the fatal mistake of chasing a doe towards my stand. I listened to him grunting as he got closer and closer following that doe. Almost a straight down shot right at the base of my ladder. Scope was filled with hair. 4x is not needed when they are about 14 feet away. It's actually kind of a hindrance. That shot is way harder than you would think. The NOE 311165rf and 30.30 did its job again. Bang flop.

The doe didn't run away. She kept walking around my tree looking at her boyfriend as if saying hey you are supposed to be chasing me. She didn't leave until I climbed down.

I have had similar experiences with deer
shot a buck last year that was sparring with another
when the one I shot dropped the other kept looking at him to get up and
finish the fight he even poked the dead on in the rump trying to get him to move
like you he didn't leave till I got up

Nice deer for sure. I've had several deer directly under my stands in years past (bow hunting) but I won't take that shot...unless it's with a gun.

That is a tough shot.
Redfield then Weaver made for some years a hinged scope mount for just such occasions. Heavy spring clips hold the scope locked to the base till you pivot it off to the side. Had a shot at a fox once at 3 yards and it worked great.

I've had a couple of similar experiences. Was sitting in a tree once (fully exposed - just standing on a board I had nailed to the branches). Doe walks up behind me around 20 feet away and snorts, I try to turn and she bolted. I resume my position and she does the same thing 15 minutes later, I turn and she bolts. This time, I turn my chair to face her direction and wait; she comes back out in the same place and looks up, but this time she caught a face full of #1 buckshot. You gotta be smarter than the animal...

Congratulations! Those VERY CLOSE shots are remembered vividly- while those 200 yard shots may fade to time....
Whoever necked the 38-55 down to 30-30 back in 1895 was a genius!

Thanks for sharing, great buck and story. I had the same shot once on a nice 8pt, with a bow. Shot him, and he made it about 60 yds before expiring. When looked where I had shot him right behind the shoulder, if I had been one inch to the right I would have spine shot him, and a inch to the left would have only grazed him.

Congratulations! IMO the real test of a hunter and his skills is how close he can get, not from how far he can make a shot. I think you passed.

Listening to those bucks grunt as they are walking to you but still out of sight. Is a thrilling memory.
I have seen a lot of bucks chasing does. But only once has the buck been grunting like a pig on the way into me.

This is a part of a thread I put on my local site. Very very few cast shooters and even fewer cast bullet hunters.

My reply was: Sometimes I get a bit excited. Remember I am shooting a chunck of lead that was on my spare tire last week and using an outdated non magnum that you actually have to cock before it goes bang. If he had been a few more inches away the bullet may have bounced off. I'll keep your advice in mind.

I've offered to aid anyone from the site wanting to learn to cast for several years but not a single taker. The majority live here in Arkansas. Wish I could get a few to take me up on my offer.

I once shot a doe in the back of the head that was standing under a box stand. The stand was about 15 feet tall. I shot her through a gap in the floor boards. I was using a 45-70 loaded with some 405 grain plain base boolits I had purchased. I told everyone it was self defense. She was trying to climb the stairs.

I like that NOE 311-165 RF (GC) bullet ..... one shot 30-30 kill on hog in Texas at 100 yds. and one shot kill 30-06 on doe on my own farm at 60 yds.
As in all hunting whether cast or jacketed, shot placement is essential. But New York State is making more and more noise about prohibiting lead projectiles for all hunting.
