What would a 38/55 be worth in a pawn shop ??
Wondering what a good fair price would be ?
Just starting to look for one ??

.
The value would be how much you're willing to pay.
Keeping in mind that pawn shops generally price their goods about 100% over their cost, if/when you find one in a pawn shop (IMO very long odds), and keeping in mind their asking price, dicker the shop owner (not some clerk) down to what you want to pay by laying the cash on the counter.
Remember, money talks, BS walks - and, good luck !

1894s were chambered in 38-55. 86s in 33 Winchester, 45/70,40-82 and others.
The pawn shops round here are also gun shops normally.
Could it be a 38-56 WCF??
Winchester 1886's were for sure chambered for that cartridge.
Condition/grade is everything in the value of old Winchesters. In 50 years of pawn shopping I have never seen an 86 in a pawn shop in any caliber. Lots of 94's and one 71 Deluxe that they wanted way too much for but never an 86.
The 38/55 was produced in the 94's in large numbers. The 38/55 is not listed as a standard caliber in the 86 but if may have been available as a special order? but rim size is significantly smaller than the others. https://www.rockislandauction.com/de...rifle-3855-wcf I wonder if its a case of mistaken identity for a 38/56?
Production dates and calibers here. The claim is the 86 was produced in 19 calibers with 10 being factory standard.

I think he said he is just beginning to look for one, not that he has found one. Very long odds on finding anything 38--55 in a Pawn shop, At least in my part of the world.
Good Luck to you!
Rick
Never have seen an 86 in a pawn shop. In fact I have rarely seen one in a local gunshow. Figure 3K for something decent.
