I made the extractor for mine from a piece of bandsaw blade with a lug soldered on. It isn't pretty, but it works.

    Thanks for the help
I see there are other people here who buy train wrecks to shoot.
Going to be a bit of wait before I have it in my hands.
A pic of the extractor may help me figure out how I’m going to do it.

It may end up being a micro rifling bore by the time I get all the rust and muck out of it and only shoot one round per lead scraping procedure.
    Ha

    Project for this wet season

    The cup is half full.

I don't have a camera that works right now, so I'll try a written description.

I made a strip of steel (I used a bandsaw blade, but a hacksaw blade would work too) or any springy steel. Cut it to fit the width of the extractor slot in the action. Bend a 90 degree corner, long enough to fit to the case body. Trim it to a truncated triangle.

Put it next to the bolt and mark where the lug needs to be. Solder or weld on a suitable lug. I was going to use steel, but for the trial I used a piece of brass. Wonder of wonders, it worked so well I am still using it.

Would my design work for a repeater? Probably not, it took some fiddling and filing to get it to pull the case ot and release it. But since it is for a single shot, it works okay.

I finally have the little beauty in my possession.
Gave it a bit of a clean out with brushes and sweat.
Made a new extractor for her.
Took it down the range and fired her a little to get acquainted.
    I tried cast in it.
Loading a 308401 proved to be a non starter but breachseated was no problems.
At 50 yards the groups weren’t very impressive and despite leaving my cleaning rod behind I had some fun.
At home I got some nice slivers of lead out of it.
The more I scrub the more muck comes out.
I think it is making it in there somehow.

I’ve loaded up some paperpatched bullets with a mild load and I’ll see if the dark bore cleans up a little next time I take it out.

    Couple of pics.

This rifle has a 1:14 or 15" twist.
Solid hex barrel with a nice inlaid front sight
The chamber is pretty much a std 30-30 chamber.
The light pb loads I used hardly rocked the ‘ol girl from the bags.
    Hmmm

    Well the loads went well
Beautiful grey mist out the end of the barrel and no confetti of paper anywhere to be seen.
I have heard of not hitting the target frame at 50 yrds and I believe it now; I only got several on mine out of 20 shots.
Had some not wanting to fire on the first hit and have had a few dud primers in these last packets or so. Still checked out the ignition system and I think will work better now.
    Hmmm
Went home and discovered I have been conditioning the barrel some.

    Yes beautiful lead smears.
Some choir boy fixed it up thou.
I think the dry patched bullets weren’t gripping the bullet and bunching back.
    Well something went wrong.
The only fail to fly case I pulled the bullet and discovered I hadn’t any powder in it.

Might have pushed it a little out of the case mouth.
The soot shown is at its max non sealed distance.
Had to use pliers to get the bullet out of the case.

    Shows engraving anyway.
Seems to have a real short taper to bore.
Barrel cleaned up a little more.
Think I’ll try some wet patches and see how they go next.
Any one shoot one of these?
Just starting to get acquainted with it.
    Cheers.

I have not shot mine much, because I haven't made an extractor yet. Have you tried any jacketed bullets through it yet? They might loosen up some of the old fouling and rust. I may smear some fine Clove lapping compound on a few bullets, and roll them between two steel plates to impregnate them. Have never tried that, but heard it can help smooth the bore a bit.

These rifles are very simple yet elegant, and were made in 45-70, and that model name translates into something like "elk shooting rifle", their elk are what we know as moose. The 32-20 and 25-20 models were named "bird shooting rifle", Probably used to shoot their giant sized grouse. I'm not sure exactly what the 30-30 was made for, but I suppose they also have some form of deer to hunt in Sweden.

My 45-70 had a very poor looking bore, but after lots of brushing and soaking with kroil, it slowly got a bit smoother, then a couple dozen paper patch loads and it has really shined up. Although the 45-70 has a fairly heavy barrel, I would not use anything but mild loads becuase of recoil and the delicate stock. Unfortunately the 30-30 bore has not responded much with my cleaning efforts, but may try the emery paste on some jacketed bullets.

    Thankyou gentlemen.
I made my extractor out of a bent worn ended allen key.
I think my sizer is a little big being around 0.305"
So I knocked up a new one today to 0302”
The sized core engraves and lightly catches/rubs and slips through the bore till the last inch or so of rifling.
    So should be sorta right.
I wet wrapped some slugs and they come out 0.311"dry.
My empty cases have expanded to 0.312" in the neck.
I thought I’d try and lodge a bullet in the barrell and knock it back to see if I can get a proper reading on it and see if the patch tears on squishing down.

Breach seated the pp’d bullet with a plugged case nice and tight.
One large rifle primer and about 1.2 grns of some kind of shotgun powder and gave it a blast.
    In a safe place.
It sounded a bit dull a primer hit and looking at the case and it had gone off.
Went to blow in the muzzle to guess how far it went, I found the nose just sticking out the muzzle.
A couple of light taps with the cleaning rod and I have this remarkable artifact.

Clearly shows the engraving. The lube groove is half the width it was and the crimp groove is now just a line.

The other side of the bullet shows a tale too.

1 shows the patch ends that didn’t meat up.
2 Shows some shiny lead revealed from patch penetration.
3 and 4 the crimp and lube grooves compressed and plugged with patch and crud.
5 what appears as blow by on the land the patch end didn’t meet.

Maybe it was seated slightly crooked or some such.
But it is the first one I have recovered just stuck in the end of the barrel.
I think the core diameter is good.
    The bullet measured 0.311".
So I think I’m closer to a proper fit to see if it will shoot clean.
I may have to scrub between shots and see if and magic happens.
    Fingers crossed.

    Thanks for viewing.
    Bruce.
I will wait on the fire lapping with compound for a while and see if it gets better.
Only 80 years more of crap to dislodge.

Too bad you didn't take a picture of the protruding projectile, I remember reading an article years ago where they made up an extremely long barrel in 32 ACP trying to get one to stop halfway out of the muzzle. As I recall they were not successful.

i had a 44-40 bullet stick in the muzzle .......reason I could see was that bullet lube got into the powder.......the case looked like it was half full of white wax .

Well I went forth and went to the range to fire my 20 shells off.
I hit the target frame this time out and had a reasonable group at 50 yrds.
The pp’ed bullets I lubed and seated went all soggy and could be moved with a thumb nail.
    Dohhh
Luckily I loaded them with some cereal filler and a light load.
They crack / whack as they hit the target. so probably 13-1400 fps.
Here is a pick of the second group

Pretty well chuffed and pleased with the results.
    Barrel cleaned up easy enough.
I’m on my way in the right direction I hope now.

    For those who have them.
My extractor only works if the round control round feeds when place in the chamber.
The extractor won’t jump the rim if it is pushed forward and doesn’t slide under extractor.
Does yours work the same as well?
I may have to make extractor#2 that stays with the bolt if It is supposed too.
    Thanks.
    Bruce
I am having fun with this rifle.
The difference is chalk and cheese from my last outing.

Mine will jump over the rim, but it is a .25-20. I did file a taper on it to help.

It has been a few years since I worked with it, I'll try to get a picture of it tonight (new phone has a camera).

    Robert

I did take pictures. The camera isn't good enough to show detail.

Well the more I shot it the better it got today.
Shot better with a slightly harder and thicker paper.
    Up to 0.312" now.
Shot dry patched was a bit sketchy but I saw and found a few patch remains.
Some were crinkled as in pushed back as in paper slip.
The tougher paper I found none but the performance of unlubed patches was patchy.
A tiny bit of lube just wiped over the exposed nose of the patch seemed to cure things.

Only 2" group at 50yrds but the old girl cleaned up easier and I can nearly see the bottom of the lands.
I have even in unearthed a new population of yabbie holes in a different location of the barrel..
Not to be deterred more shooting needs to be done.
    Soaking ,cleaning scrubbing and shooting.
    Wonder what I will discover.
    All is well.
