Un-loved little .22 Hawes single shot

Hawes single shots were made by Sauer in Berlin and imported to the US into the '70's as near as I can find. They seem simple and reasonably well made, but with rather flimsy plastic grips - this one the grips were broken and filled with hot glue. We've had a couple of days of inclement weather, so rooted around in the scrap pile and found some maple that needed something done with. Made the grips and a box for it. The loading blocks are walnut and lift out easily. It is more accurate than this old man and is a bit happier now.

Looking good there. Well designed box.

Gawjuss, just gawjuss! Is that Hawes as close to the old Stevens tip-up as it looks?

Thanks for the kind words, gents! Froggie- Looks probably better than it is- aluminum barrel that is lined with steel and I think the "receiver" is mostly chrome and pot metal - still a fun plinker. I have an old Stevens tip up that needs parts / work - it was my dad's, after WWII there were these crazy high velocity .22LR bullets. He jammed one in that old tip up and let 'er rip- the gun came apart and a bit of shrapnel split his wig right at his hairline. Growing up, any time there was questionable loads or firearms or procedures -he'd just point at that scar.

Great follow up post beezapilot! Thanks for the additional info about the Hawes and the story about the Stevens. I had one of the rifles that was missing the locking bar and its spring and screw. It also had a typically horrible bore, so I gave it to an elderly gunsmith, now long gone who really liked single shots. He copied the missing parts from one of his Stevens and relined the bore. It was factory equipped with the standard ladder style tang sight and a globe front so I was good to go! He warned me to stick with SV ammo which I did, but then I sold it to finance "the next new thing". As my PA Dutch ancestors said, "Ve grow too soon oldt, und too late schmardt!"
