Both ignorance and stupidity are potentially lethal. Not knowing stuff is normal ignorance and can be easily fixed by education but nothing can fix stupidity. Of the four serious tree stand accidents I know anything about, common stupidity has been the sad common thread.

Ignorant or foolish, I especially hate to hear that someone has been injured or killed while misusing a tree stand and my heart goes out to the mourning survivors. But, I can't help but suspect that it was only a matter of time before something truly painful would happen to the victim.

Sorry to hear that. We all need to be careful in our adventures but sometimes it happens and goes bad.

WhenI first started teaching Hunter Ed years ago Turkey hunting had the most accidents. Most getting shot mistaken for game. But today it is Deer Hunting. Mostly stand related accidents. This is/was in Arkansas.

Purchased my first stand in 89 or 90. Second time using it bow hunting, shot a deer and sat down and relaxed for 20 minutes. Stood up to get my deer and almost walked off the end of the platform. Yup, went out and Purchased hated a leash for myself the next afternoon. In those days, they were pretty crude but would probably save your butt.

Terrible time of year to suffer a preventable loss. My condolences to his friends and family.

One more case: My buddy stood to take a shot at a bear, while in a climber. Not bothering to lean how to use the climber, he had the bottom fall out and went for an air walk. Snapped the rifle in two and broke his neck. Following a reasonable recovery, he is mobile and only partially hindered by his injury. He's lucky.
