    Rossi R92 SS 44 Magnum

Guys, Does anyone have experience with shooting powder coated cast in the stainless steel barrel of the Rossi levergun? I looked at one at a gunshow and liked what I saw but couldn't tell if the barrel was smooth enough for cast.

    Thanks!

worst case scenario, get 1000 pieces of brass from starline and 1000 jacketed soft or hollow points zero bullets from rozedist and that should break the barrel in pretty well.

I have shot a fair amount of cast boolits out of my BIL 16" stainless Rossi 92 in 45 colt with out issue. That is not to say it won't be an issue in a different rifle.

I got my Rossi R92 in 2018. Only problem I have is that it will flat out not feed 44 Specials. I have had to use 44 Magnum rounds powered down to 44 Special velocities. In 44 Magnum it does just fine with Oregon Trail .431 240 grains swc's and Lee 430 240TL swc's. I have read that the later Rossi's will load both 44 Special and 44 Magnum.

I just purchased a 20" SS R92 in .44 mag a couple months back. Here is what I have learned.

The rifle will NOT shoot Missouri Bullets .430 TCFB 240 gr Hi-Tek coated bullets with 10.0 gr of Unique. They keyhole at 50 yards. I'm back to square one of needing to slug the barrel to determine what size is needed.

The rifle will shoot Hornady XTPs (in both 200 and 240 gr) well with full house H110 loads.

For informational/entertainment purposes the Teslong borescopes are an incredible bargain. The basic model that will work with an Android phone or a Windows Laptop is only $55 dollars (but not iPhone compatible). I have had mine a few years now and it is still working fine, although $45 when I got it.

Not that it it is an absolute indication of cast boolit compatibility, a look see with a bore scope will give you an indication of how bad/good the reamer chatter marks look. However, you really need a cast boolit shooter barrel for comparison. What looks pretty sketchy/bad may still run cast without issue. Hence the entertainment value. But they sure are handy for determining if you have fouling or not.

    Just google Teslong borescopes.

I have a Rossi in 357, and have shot a ton of pc'd bullets,
those 180 gr Missouri bullet co. Pugnose.
    It shouldn't be an issue.

My Rossi carbine is neither stainless steel, nor .44 Magnum (it's .45 Colt), but it likes cast AND PC'd 250 gr. RNFPs. The 2 loads I run through it most often are:
1.) 8.0/Unique/250 gr. RNFP, to duplicate factory performance.
2.) 18.5/2400/250 gr. RNFP (Elmer's Keith's old load, if memory serves), for hunting.

With cast lead or PC'd projectiles, the rifle gives me very good, always reliable performance. I'd be very surprised if your carbine will behave any differently.

    Try cast sized to .432.

I looked at a couple of the new Braztech Rossis yesterday. They look well put together, but the comb line on the carbine type stock is overly square- not like the older Rossis I've owned. Just a nit I had to pick.
I also handled the new Marlin/ Ruger- nice but large loop laminate is another nit to me.
Oh, and the Henry .410 lever action weighs enough to be a chunk to carry. Nice looking, though.

Thanks Guys for all the info, I plan to size to .432 or .433 after powder coating depending on what chambers. I will use a RNF Lyman at about 240 grains. Thanks again for the info, I appreciate it.

I assumed you have purchased a rifle, but I see people are still posting. I have the new stainless Rossi 92 in 44 magnum. I have found the following to be applicable to my particular rifle.

The rifle shoots cast 44 special without any problem. However, I am using the Lyman 429-421 mold. It’s a longer bullet. It probably feeds similar to a 44 magnum. But I have never had a problem with feeding those bullets in my particular rifle.

My rifle had a chip or some thing which kept the hammer from falling to the firing pin. It would catch on the half cock notch. I ended up taking it apart and cleaning it completely, filed a burr off the sear and hammer, and reassembled. I also cleaned up some detents so the lifter would snap in place, and replaced the safety with a plug. I have not had a function problem since then.

I have not had a keyholing problem with bullets sized to .430. However I ordered a Lee push through sizer, to ream to .431 or .432, to see if these shoot more accurately. The rifling is a little “shallow”. It is probably designed for jacketed bullets. But this does not by itself seem to be a problem. But I am just plinking at 50 -100 yards.

People complain about the factory sights. It’s a decent open sight that one would expect on a 92. It is not a target sight. I filed off the bead of the front post so I am using it as a flat-top front sight. This seems like an improvement - or what I am used to. It is a companion to my .44 spl Vaquero. Both shoot Lyman 429-421 with 7.5 gn of Unique. I don’t own a .44 Mag revolver, so I haven’t shot any magnum cartridges in the rifle, and probably won’t.

The rifle is a lot of fun. The stock could use some shaping and a darker stain. Eventually.
