Reloading .38 Super: The odyssey begins...

When I got my .38 Super(s), brass for them were unobtainium. Starline had .38 TJ brass available, but no .38 Super. I sent a query as to whether the load data or function (.38 TJ has different dimensions at key points) might be different between the two. My query was answered by a Sterling individual named Hunter Pilant, who sent me 20 of the .38 TJ for free, with an entreaty to try them out.
After too long an interval, I managed to locate reloads, pistols, and other required "linearly aligned aquatic fowl" in the same place (gun range) at the same time, and fired the 20 reloads through the chronograph. All 20 functioned without and fired without a hitch (a testament to the brass as much as to my reloading competence), and displayed normative primer signs.
The exact number crunching awaits, but it looks like 5.2/BE-86/147 gr. TC-PC gives ~1060 + 35 f/s, which is a touch mild for my purposes, but is a step in the right direction. The max load, 5.7/BE-86/147 gr. JHP gives 1140 f/s from a 5" barrel, which is a bit more like it. The slightly smaller capacity of the TJ case and the higher lubricity of the TC-PC projectiles may be enough to boost the muzzle velocity over 1150 f/s, which is what we're looking for.
BE-86 MAY be a bit fast-burning for best velocities in .38 Super, so the hunt is on for Blue Dot or AA#7. Until then, any input from .38 Super shooters who have used BE-86 would be appreciated.

Can't help you with BE-86 but the Super is very easy to load for. Have mostly used Unique and SR4756 but after reading some recent reloading articles am going to go over to AAC-7 for all my loads.

Mackay Sagebrush who posts here sometimes has an ammo manufacturing business. His 147s are running 1250 fps but I don't recall what powder he is using...

My HC field load is the SAECO 383 with 6.0 Unique at 1240 from a 5".

    What guns do you have?

    Kosh75287:

I load 38 Super and have been for twenty or more years. I load for USPSA major, which requires a power factor of 165,000 (bullet weight times velocity). I currently load 7.2 grains of N350 behind a 124 grain Montana Gold hollow point bullet. I also cast 125g lead and coat with Hytec powder coat and use the same powder load. The velocities do not change that much. I have used WW 540 and AA7 in the past.

Star Line shows .38 Super in sock now if you need some, or want to build up your stock. I prefer the .38 Super Comp, it's a true rimless version of the Super and I did have to adjust my extractor on my Colt Gov't Model to reliably extract them, (works well with regular .38 Super also). The only difference is the lack of a rim on the Super Comp.

I've not used BE-86, though have seen it recommended for the Super. For cast bullet target loads I use Unique and with jacketed I've used Power Pistol, WSF, and N105.

Here's some links on loading the .38 Super you may find helpful. I have nine Gov't Model/Commander pistols and the .38 Super is by far my favorite and most accurate.
