Hello lead mashers
I put together a lead wire extruder based inspired by Mr Kutil's design.
My effort is a 5.5" hydraulic ram with a 200mm/8" travel and a 3500psi hydraulic power pack giving 32 tons.
As you can see its built on tie rods,these are 32mm/1 1/4" diameter held by 8 60mm M16 grade 12.9 cap screws and the end or die plate is 25mm/1" plasma cut mild steel.
My cylinder is powered both ways,I had a bit of trouble with it as it was fitted with velocity fuses! These are a safety feature that lock the cylinder if it tries to retract too fast.
The hydraulic control is by manual pneumatic valve.
The brass plate on the end of the ram came with it,so I used that as the basis of my billet holder.As Mr Kutil's,my billet holder slides up,but mine is removable so I can cast the billet in situ.
The billet holder is 43mm x 195mm and the outer is 75mm so that gives me 16mm wall thickness
The die is threaded into a 40mm tube with a bored 14 mm hole and the back end is threaded into a cap on the outboard end of the die plate.The first incarnation was 32mm high pressure tubing which lasted exactly 1 swaging attempt...anyway...
Heating up the die definitely lowers the swage pressure,but you only need to do it the first time, in fact you have to let the billet cool down as when it is too hot the extruded wire collapses under its own weight.
I have built this with the express purpose of swaging lead wire for swaged 38 wadcutters and the first batch turned out to be about bhn 9 so perhaps a little hard but it proves that the press can handle it.With a 3kg billet of freshly cast lead I get a beautiful piece of 4m long .355" wire.
