I had a MK1 version of your pistol that was about the most accurate .22 pistol I ever owned. It was the only pistol or revolver that I ever bought that was dead center on both elevation and horizontal at 10 yards. And yes, you guessed it. I sold it to buy a S&W Model 41 which was not as accurate as the Ruger. I sold the 41 and bought a MKII 22/45 and I really like it but it does not shoot as well as the MK1. Really nice group on your MKII though.

Congrats on picking up the Mk II. The Ruger Mark series are hard to beat. My Mark II Gov’t, Mark III Target, and Mark IV 22/45 Lite are all reliable, accurate guns.

I bought a MKI5.5in bull barrel many years ago and it has never failed to amaze me. A friend of mine that worked for the Army Marksmanship unit touched up the trigger a bit and installed some better sites. Couldn't ask for anything else.

Nice! A number of years ago I was looking for a MKI or MKII like yours but couldn't find one, so ended up with a MKIII Target wit the bull barrel. They are awesome pistols and fun to shoot - I have never had an issue with mine. Would still like to run across one like yours - enjoy and have fun! Looks like you do mighty fine without the rear sight!

Have a MK III Hunter with 7-1/2" bbl and a MK IV Target with 5" bbl....they are tack drivers....glad your is doing well....I really like the old guns with a few battles fought on them!
When guns are outlawed only criminals and the government will have them and at that time I will see very little difference in either!

Wolf - congrats on your find, and good shooting! I own the same 6" MKII and a 6 7/8" (tapered) target model. They both are the most accurate pistols I have ever own - and that is a lot in the last 50 plus years.

I have one from the 70’s with 6-7/8 barrel. By far the most accurate .22 I’ve owned but it likes Federal ammo - doesn’t shoot well with cheap stuff.

I’ve shot several skunks in live traps with it from several steps away to keep from getting the smelly treatment. A bullet in the brain will “delay the spray” until I can dump the trap and get the carcass out.

I have a pair of Ruger Mk III 22/45's. (His and Hers)

Action is essentially the same, but the 22/45 has a different grip angle for the hand. Much straighter, like a 1911 grip vs the steeply angled Ruger grip.

Both have cheap red dot sights mounted. Both will put 10 rounds offhand into a pop bottle cap without touching the sides. And they will do it quickly and quietly and easily at 10 yards. Farther is doable but takes longer.

In short, they'd shoot eyeballs and never miss. They are easily the most accurate pistols I own with the possible exception of the Excel Accelerator in .22mag.
But that is a horse of a different color.

    In short
I truly believe we need to get back to basics.

    Get right with the Lord.
    Get back to the land.
Get back to thinking like our forefathers thought.

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you
and give you His peace. Let all of the earth – all of His creation – worship and praise His name! Make His
    praise glorious!

I've always had a mk 1 or 2 around, Mk 2 bull barrel in the safe right now. The only thing I've ever found that shot better was my fathers High Standard Military, but then that's talking apples and oranges. You're going to have some fun once that rear sight goes on!!

My High Standard Military would put 50 shots into 1.5” at 50 yards. That is an accurate gun. Like a fool I sold it. One of the few guns I regret selling. We have two Rugers...not in the same class, but good for the price.

Yes, and since it was my fathers I take special care of it, hoping to pass it on to my sons, but the Rugers have always filled my expectations for good shooting. For the price range Rugers can't be beat.

Good for you for keeping it and passing it down. One of your sons will be a very lucky.

I figured someone else would mention it, but what I always do with a new to me 22 pistol is try every kind of 22 shells I have on hand for accuracy. Since one cannot normally reload for them, the only variable is in different brands and bullet weights of 22 shells. Some will do much much better than others. I cannot recommend the brand or bullet weight; all pistols are a law unto themselves where accuracy is concerned. I once had an old Winchester Model 1906 pump 22 that absolutely adored Federals Lightnings or was it Thunderbolts. One extra problem with some 22 auto's is that some will not feed at all with various brands of standard velocity, but once again, only way to know that is to try them. My old Model B High Standard military would not cycle CCI standard velocity at all, nor would my Ruger SR22.

    Nice,
But can you get it apart and back together again?

I’m kidding, love them and own 6 or 7 at this point. Prefer the look of the bull barrels, but the long heavy taper barrel models have always been great shooters for me.

I wouldn't kid about them, because that's why I dumped my Mk.III and went to Browning Buckmarks. Just as accurate if not more so (it's the Indian and not the arrow) and so much easier to strip down and put back together.

MkII's are the best of the bunch. Lock the bolt open, use a solvent soaked Q tip on the back of the barrel, and the bolt face. A dental pick will help in the corners. And a bent solvent soaked 22 cleaning brush on the chamber. No need to take them apart, unless you are working on the trigger.
