Recall many years ago when my invertebrate zoology class was taken on tour of the back rooms of the Chicago Field museum. This is where the real collections consisting of cabinets full of dried specimens reside or at least that was the section we were taken back to since there were also other things that were historical there. I recall seeing a box of 32 shot shells lying on a table. They looked like they could of been 32-20s from the height of the box.
Some cartridges in the past were specifically loaded for museums. There was a museum load called dust shot used for small things like gigantic tropical butter flies I was told.

I'm kind of surprised that you haven't gotten more replies (and knowledgeable ones at that) on this box of ammo. I know there is a lot of info on the web about old cartridges and dating the boxes and labels, I just don't remember where it is.

My guess is around 1900, give or take twenty years.

The cartridge in the upper right hand corner looks to have been tried in a center fire gun at one time.

I seem to recall reading that some guns had a movable firing pin, but that just be some of my memory brain cells misfiring lol.

32 long was first produced in 1861. 32 short was introduced in 1865. There is a good article on Ammoland about the 32 rf

The Marlin Model 1891 or 1892 (the precursor to the Model 39) in .32 cal was one, I am sure there were others. The centerfire rounds that worked were the .32 Short Colt or the Long Colt.

Not a bad article but as much and more has been written about this on this forum including velocity data from vintage ammo in 32 rf and reloads using the smokeless powder/.22 blank and ramsets.

About the age of ammo judging from boxes. I am interested too.
