    Safety Whatzit

Bought a box of loading supplies with some mystery metal. Anyone know what it goes to? Does it look functional, or a candidate for the scrap bin?

Looks likea thumb safety from a military stile bolt action.
There is no difference between communism and socialism, except in the means of achieving the same ultimate end: communism proposes to enslave men by force, socialism—by vote. It is merely the difference between murder and suicide. Ayn Rand

That's my call on it too.
With the sort of roughish finish, I'd guess it to be from a war production era Springfield 03A3.
At a glance, it looks new and will work just fine.

There are after market safeties available that will work without hitting the bottom of a scope.
It might be a left over from someone installing one of those as part of a sporterizing project.
In the late 50s and into the 60s, the market was flooded with surplus rifles.
The 03s were prime projects to sporterize. Plenty of unissued ones were available.
