RCBS 55gr. or Lyman 225314

Hello

I'm planning to take the plunge into casting for .22 caliber. The rifles I'll use are .223 with a 9" twist, .223 with 12" twist and a .22/250 with 14" twist. I'm looking at velocities in the 1500 to 2000fps range and intend to shake and bake powder coat, size to .225" and to use gas checks if necessary for plinking accuracy. The decision right now is.....RCBS or Lyman?

I'd appreciate any insights, opinions or experiences with either of these molds.

My RCBS always performs admirably at those velocities . I haven't tried the powder coat yet but lube and gas check work fine .

225314?

I've found the Lyman 225 462 to be an excellent bullet in all three of those twists in the same cartridges.

I've seen good accuracy with the Lyman #225415 in .22 Hornet, but would imagine the RCBS version would also work well as long as it's diameter is large enough. I haven't loaded .22 cast bullets in about twenty years but always used a .225" size die.

I have the Arsenal 60gr Elvis pc mold. Works great in my AR and bolt gun. Just another option.

I shot PC, gas check, 49-49-2 percent, Pb-WW-Sn, BHN 11, RCBS 55-22-SP boolits at speeds in excess of 2,500 fps with a resulting "gray cloud" of rotational disintegration. None of the 15 "hot for lead" Winchester 748 powdered, 23.5 to 25.5 grains, in 0.5 grain increment, boolits, found a 60" x 60" white target with 2" red dot center at 100 yards. Jacketed bullet velocity from that lead boolit shape and alloy was unobtanium.

I should have added from a 1:9" twist bull barrel. What alloy there Mate?

I have had good results with both of those with lube. I have never tried powder coating, but I would still expect good results.

I've shot a lot of 225415s (Lyman's) out of numerous 22 CFs including those mentioned. I still use it in my Hornet and 223 Rem Contenders for subsonic small game loads. It should be an excellent bullet for your intended uses. I suggest GCing even if PCing for best accuracy.
