Back then, only about 25% of the population supported the war for independence.
Another 20-odd percent were loyal to the crown.
And like today, at least half the population didn't care about anything but their self.

Mate we have the same problem here with those who have little consideration for their Country. I am monarchist because of the low down slugs we have running this Country.The only thing keeping us from becoming a Socialist Republic was the Monarchy, while I would love the be a Republic like America, I fear it will not happen here as our leaders have all given themselves to socialism. And as you pointed out so very few are willing to fight for their freedom till it is taken from them, and even then I believe most will just roll over. I doubt the new king will be able to kelp much as he has already shown very poor taste. God Bless you guys and may your Republic remain strong. Regards Stephen.

A few shooting friends of mine went to England in the mid '90's, to shoot the British National Matches at Bisley. The Queen showed up, walked up and down the firing line, and then presented the trophy to the winner. That's class!!! Always regretted not going to that one. Couldn't afford it at the time.

When was the last time any president came to Perry and presented a trophy? I know one Marine that won the President's trophy 3 times during the Clinton years, and told me that he never received the congratulatory letter, which is the custom.

Senator Kennedy on the other hand... Call me what you want, I'd have been happier if he had died younger.

Yeah, isn't that about right for humanity. Usually somewhere around a third are good, about one third bad and a third just don't care.
As to the royalty thing, not that I'm of a black robe regiment but no king but Jesus suits me just fine.

I shot NRA High Power Rifle competition with Adrian for many years and though this was an interesting story that was sent to me.

Subject: Queen of England

Now I know most of you couldn’t give a rat’s behind about the royal family and what goes on, but one of our life members, a redneck welder from Lovington, NM had the opportunity to meet her. Here is Adrian Morley’s short story.



I have shot competition since 1966. I represented the National Guard on the All Guard team in late 70s. I transferred to the USAR in 80 but didn't shoot for them till 1987. I was a major then. I shot as well as coached. In 1988 combat matches were introduced and we shot against international teams. Australia, England, Canada, and South Africa. The OIC of the rifle program retired and the administrator of the program refused to appointment a new OIC. By SOP I wrote a letter to USAR headquarters declaring "in their inability to make a decision I was assuming command of the program ". This was how I ended up being the OIC where I served till 1999.

I shot on both high power and combat teams. In 1993 England had the 100 years celebration of their National Rifle Association. 100 years before I think it was Queen Mary that fired the final shot of if the initial matches. Not till 1993 did reality attend the matches again. I was OIC of the USAR team and as such the representative of the United States. The Queen attended a lunch with representatives of attending countries. So I got to have lunch with the Queen. Once again the Queen would fire the final shot. The weather had been dry and calm all week. The British weapon was set in a machine rest at 500 meters. Issue ammo was to be used. It was zeroed in the calm. During the closing ceremony it was raining with a strong wind. The officer that led the Queen out to fire the shot said, "let me adjust for wind". The Queen said, "no, tell me what needs done and I will do it". She did and got a bullseye. Her target is next to Queen Mary's target. During the reception line I got to shake her hand. I said , "howdy mam". She ask how we were doing in the matches. I told her that it was different than we normally shot. She had a follow-up question. "Is that a problem ". I said no mam, we just have to work harder. ( We won the 4 man team match).

She was very polite and easy to talk to. A highlight of my career.

For much of my life I had simple and ill informed views of the British Monarchy.

While true that some members of the royal family have behaved very poorly (not limited to recent offspring, nor their behaviors), and while also true that many in America have no appreciation for a Monarchy (people have their own views, and are entitled to them as life is a mix of lessons and historical imperfections), my views have changed.

Queen Elizabeth II led a life that was by all reports I have every heard (from a variety of sources, very little of it current US major media) honorable, upright, respectful of British citizens and subjects, supportive of British tradition, and had the ability to support her PMs when the chips were down. She supported the man that arguably saved western civilization (WSC), and the woman that saved British economically (Lady Thatcher).

I have recently learned of a key role of the British Monarchy, and that is to serve as a point of continuity during changes of government under the sway of voters, and she seems to have performed quite superbly at that.

I may not agree w/ every social policy that was ever enacted in GB or its Commonwealth, nor the general trajectory of societies under Monarchs (there have honestly been a number of good ones, though the bad can do a lot of damage), but I have had the very enjoyable opportunity to work w/ numerous people from Britain and Australia during my career, and almost w/o exception found them to be fine and enjoyable people.

For all that respected or admired QEII, my condolences. I fear Charles III will be a great deal different, and not for the better.

I understand she did one service to the world, shortly before she passed. She made a Royal decree that no King or Queen of England would ever again serve past the age of 80. So Charles III will only serve as King for 7 years.
Hard to imagine being 90+ and having to put up with what she put up with almost daily. Truly you can pick your friends but not your family members.

Never having been under her rule, I have no idea how good or bad it is.
But looking at things here today, compared to what I see happening there, I think she did as good a job as any of the idiots in charge we've had.
These days, we seem to have the attitude, our way is how it should be for everyone.
We are always right about everything.
But even here, we are more divided than any other time I can remember.
I wonder how we became this way????
It's very sad.
To me, she did the best she could.
And did it with class.

I will never understand the fascination that people have with British royalty.
Our nation fought a long bloody war to be free of the concept that some inbred offspring of a ruthless tyrant had some God given right to rule over millions just because of their supposedly special bloodline.
