Varner rifles, anyone familiar with them? A new to me .22.

I had never heard of them, but got this on a trade with a good friend on the board here. It is a copy of a Stevens Favorite, made between 1985-1989 I beleive. It has a petite half octagon/round barrel, with a globe front and a very nice after market peep that is a dream to shoot. Nice case hardening on uthe action, the lever snaps shut with authority when closed. The trigger appears original, breaks at about #2 or less. Walnut stock and forearm, with a black forend cap. It shoots very well, from 25 yds out to 150 yds, yes I said 150 yds, on a 4x6" clanger. When the sight is dialed it, very seldom miss it at 150 yds. It seems to like about any type of quality ammo I put in it, with a preference for Winchester T22 and Super X. It will shoot either one into a ragged hole at 25 yds, and about the same with the T22 at 50 yds. Dont have much of that left, less than a brick and they have not made it in several years, will send some pics to TBG to post of it.

I do not have one, but from all I read about them, they seem to be high quality rifles.

Had one for maybe 10 years, shot it often in our club 22 shoots; great little gun and very well made. I talked to the guy making them before buying and he was very helpful telling me all he went through.

Consider yourself lucky, I have been looking for one for a long time and have never found one. At least not one I could afford...

I get the idea that they were well conceived and executed, but that making them and selling them at a profit to keep the company going was the problem. There just wasn’t sufficient market for a Cadillac version of a Model T rifle! Pity!

Dayton-Traister bought the tooling and rights many years ago, but never put the gun into production. The holy grail version was one they called a "Scheutzen" (which really wasn't) but had a beautiful perch-belly stock, case-hardening, checkering, and light engraving. And the case-colored receiver was an add-on option, as was the (clunky but functional) tang sight.

I remember them as a going outfit for a while, likely still have a catalog somewhere. The action was a good rendition of the Stevens 1915, but considerably tighter. Varner offered chambering in 22 WMR, but I've never seen one. I have a nearly new plain one in 22 LR.
