noob reloader=powder question

Just getting into casting and reloading.I was at the gun store the other day Getting primers ,brass and looking for powder.Came across Reloader7,on the can it says great fo 45-70.Since this is what I'm loading for I bought some.Now I'm not so sure this is what I need .Looking at different loading data on here amd other websites,this does not seem like a very popular powder.I guess what I should say is there are more loads for IMR 4198,3031 and h4198.Should I get some of the other powders or just stick with what I have.I'm reloading for a Marlin GG and a Buffalo Classic using a RD 325 GC mould.I have a Lee reloading manual and I'm only wanting somwhere around 1,500 to 1,700fps from this load.That's probably more than I need any way for deer.Already killed one with a factory 405 Rem round whats that do about 1,350. Any help would be appreciated.

I have burned about every powder in a 45/70 you can think of and many you couldnt think of. The rl#7 is prolly one of the best if you want to see how close to a 458 you can get with a 45/70. For reduced loads there are better choices, lots and lots of um.
A few of my most favoritest for the lesser loads are 2400, 4227, and 4198.
The clasic smokless load for group #2 load level rifles for about the last 100 years with that 405 gn weight range is 24/24. Thats easy to remember, 24gn 2400.

...............Reloader 7 is a kissin' cousin to 4198. It meters a lot better then H or IMR4198. I've never used any myself, but I have a couple buddies who do and they say it's a lot better then 4198 (due to metering) and they say it burns cleaner.

So can I use rl-7 for the lower powered loads like what I'm looking for,somewhere 1,500 to 1,700.Probably closer to the 1,500 range.When I bought the powder I asked the man at the gunshop if I should buy more than one powder,he said no this rl-7 would work for what I wanted,guess I'm a little confused now.Thanks for ya,lls help so for.

Get a copy of the Lyman 48th edition. They've got RE7 loads in the velocity range you want. It may not be the best for the pffft-ting mouse phart loads some enjoy but for everything else, Re7 pretty much cannot be beat; from low/medium loads to smoking hot loads. Go back and thank the sales guy. First time I've heard good info from one in a long time.

R7 may not give you great accuracy at lower velos but soop it up a little and it works great. Shot a couple pounds of R7 in my first Browning 86 4570 rifle. It is kick ass accurate powder but is also one that prefers higher velos than most want to shoot, at least that is my experience. 1250-1300 is a great velo in the old 4570 and with several powders, unless you just want speed then R7 works well. Back then I was into hotter stuff and could routinely hit a 2lb coffee can at 200yds with that rifle. After shooting a moose at 140yds I switched to cast bullets at around 1300 and shot my 2nd moose at 75yds. The 4570 is not velocity sensitive, nor does it need big velos to go hunting. A friend has a n Uberti in 50-90, his loads are all in R7 with 300gr cast bullets at velos I don't care to shoot.

Reloader 7 (AKA Re-7,and Rl-7) is one of the best powders for moderate to light loads in big cases. I have found it to be quite good in 30/30, 338 WM, 444, and 308 all with CB's. Every barrel has a "personality" of its own so hopefully your 45/70 likes it. I discovered RE-7 while searching for a replacement for 5744 when that powder became seriously hard to find. That was when I noticed in the new Lyman CB book that it seemed to be listed for almost all rifle calibers from 222 on up.

Hang onto the RL-7 , there is data out there , while it may not be best in reduced loads ... you will at some point in time venture into mid-range loads and it will be very useful .
Keep an eye out for some faster powders for lighter loads ... look in the Lyman Cast Bullet #4 and make a list of all the powders you can use and then go on a Powder Quest to find them ... you want to have 3 or 4 powders to work with for light - medium - heavy loads ... no one powder will do it all .
Thankfully I'm starting to see more powder availability ...

ReLoder 7 is a very good powder in the 45-70, works well in moderate to very high level charges, a tick slower than 4198, maybe, but I have gotten better accuracy with RL7 than 4198 in the 45-70. I have also used RL7 in the 300 Savage, 308 Win and 32 Special for mild loads with cast bullets.

My advice to a newer reloader; Pay very little attention to any load data you see on any forum or "pet loads" web site, hear from any gun counter clerk, range rat, good intended friend, or gun shop guru. Get your data from published reloading manuals, a few. There are a few powder, bullet manufacturer websites that have data that I occasionally use, but after 40+ years of reloading, I still go to my manuals first. In 1970 I had a squib. In all my reloading I have never had "too hot" loads/kaboom from any manual data, but I have seen questionable/dangerous data on forums...

I find this rather amusing, as those manuals have been getting loads from this board for years! Companies used to recommend this board for cast bullet loading information. They still may be, for all I know.

I just take my starting load from the manual and load in tenths of a grain increments until I get the best load. It's interesting to watch a big pattern shrink and the widen. The most accurate load will suck down to a tiny pattern on paper. I load five different grainages and shoot 'em. Have a big notebook and pen to write it all down.

You can find data for it but I prefer 3031 for my 4570 loads.
