    Browning 1885 Sights

    Greetings,
I have recently obtained an 1885 Browning in 45-70 (1994 manufacture date). I want to upgrade the factory buckhorn sights to something more useful.
The stock attached without an exposed metal tang so traditional tang sights won’t work.
It was tapped for a hunting scope. Does anyone know of a vintage style sight or scope that might work? Anything that could be mounted into the dovetail where the buckhorn sets?

I’d like to mount the sight myself. I plan to use the rifle mostly for recreational shooting (may be “Quigley” matches on the mainland some day).
Any suggestions and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. (I live in Hawaii so gunsmiths are hard to find.)

B78 no tang, Google B78 vernier sight and away you go to your decision. Mine are the latter tang versions but a properly cut clean oversized oval with vernier epoxy bedded is an option.

My brother has the same rifle. We plan to shoot 350-405 grain bullets at shorter ranges. We went with a Skinner peep sight that mounts directly behind the stock rear sight and a .500 tall front sight. 'Koger suggested a Lyman 17A front sight, which may happen in the future. They are beautiful rifles, enjoy yours! hc18flyer

Yes, I have seen some over the years with sight base flushed into top of wrist and vernier slide with peep pivots up forward allowing grip, some sat on top with inserts that were attached to. Google Browning B78 Images.
