To lube or not to lube

I'm getting ready to pan lube my first money bullets. These have the first 2 drive bands reduced. Do I need to lube the grooves for these first 2 lube grooves since they will be seated outside the case? Thanks, Rob

Agreed.. sounds like not too many grooves there. to hold lube if 2 bands are above surface. I think I would alox them and then pan lube.. at least some lube will be available in the first 2 grooves for use.

You probably don’t need to lube them. Only your rifle knows for sure.

If they're slow-ish pistol boolits, lubing only one bottom groove is fairly common.
Especially if it's rather wide. Also, some of the .45ACP type molds only have one groove anyway.

ID:	303310sorry for being so vague. It is a .40 cal 420gr. to load into a 40-65 case. The bottom three bands will be inside the case. Rob

For target shooting I lube all the grooves even the ones outside the case , keep the loaded rounds in loading block , boolit up . I tend to shoot a lot more at the shooting range the lube is needed ...
I am a more lube is better when it comes to big bore rifles .
Hunting or carrying in the field ... the exposed grooves don't get lube ... too messy . Since I don't shoot too many rounds hunting ... lubrication isn't a problem .
I prefer a soft lube like Lithium-Beeswax (1 to 3 ratio) and soft lube is best left inside the case .

Use a good lube and you wont need to fill all the grooves but you rifle's barrel will tell the tale !

40-65 that's an interesting round ... I've always been fond of the 40 cal's ...rifle and handgun .!

There are many successful designs with less lube capacity than the bottom 2 grooves on that boolit. I hate lube outside the case and I wouldn’t do it unless the rifle demanded it.

Well I'm not a big fan of lubed grooves outside of cases for that application I would definitely at least put a l o x in the exposed grooves

I can't remember ever getting my best accuracy with a rifle bullet with all grooves filled. I don't shoot 40-65 though, or even 45-70. My starting point is almost always 2 grooves filled (or one groove plus the gas check space if it has one).

That's the critical data. With BP you need as much lube as you can get in most cases, with smokeless just lube the bottom two and you will be OK. An easy way to check is to look for a lube star on your muzzle. If you don't have one add some more lube.
