Stevens aggressively advertised the idea that their takedown rifles could be packed in a travel trunk. Such trunks were necessary because people traveled on trains, with their baggage out of sight in the baggage car. Once the automobile had supplanted the train, the need for breaking a gun down to pack it disappeared.

Yeah, makes sense. Those "Travel Trunks", my Mom called them "Steamer Trunks" I have one that was hers that is I am sure is more than 70 years old. I have a couple others including a pretty new one (plastic with wheels but same size and stackable) that my employer gave to all employees, they packed it with emergency supplies and gave them to us right after Katrina!

No matter why, the ease of detaching the barrel makes them a dream for the home gunsmith. Which is how I fell into the Stevens rabbit-hole some 25 years ago. Stevens also touted the idea of having multiple barrels, easily swapped by the user. It long ago occurred to me that the wild popularity of the Ruger 10/22 rests on this feature.
