Not a key lock fan, but for those who don't already have one, that might do the trick. Mine is an older, 24-3 Model. What I find surprising is that it is a more accurate gun than the 624 I had back in the 80's. I'm pretty sure I am not the man I once was, but This one is a dinger, where the 624 was "meh" as far as accuracy goes.

44 Special is my absolute favorite caliber. Got a Lipsey Ruger NM Blackhawk 4" 44 Special about 8 years ago. I shoot it more than any of my others in 38 Special or 32 S&W Long. I tried a Ruger GP100 5" 44 Special but (I know this is picky) it had one of those new fiber optic front sights and never liked it. Sold it for a little profit. I have been looking for a 624 4" for years, but I don't think any ever made it west of the Mississippi.

They had a few in California, but for some reason they were nearly 100 dollars more that the longer barreled guns. I got my 624 out the door for 40 odd dollars less than the 4 inch's base cost and in those days 40 dollars meant something to me.
The 24-3 I have now cost me 999.00 plus tax a year or two ago.

I paid $325 for mine. New. In 1984 dollars.
Three years later picked up a new 624 for $225 when an LGS closed them out.
Four years later I decided I needed a varmint rifle & traded the 624 for a .22-250.
I’ve sold & swapped a lot of guns, but that 624 is the only one I really regret letting go.
The 4" ones will shoot. This one is from the 80's.

I agree with you Joe, 44 spl. is my go to first choice. Mine is a Ruger flat top with the smaller grip frame. Very first Ruger I didn't have to touch for cylinder size or trigger work. I do have a Uberti Bisley that gets a lot of attention but the fixed sights limits my use of it. I did see a 44 spl. Ruger Bisley BH listed the other day, $1100. Not off the charts but a little too rich for me. A friend has the smith 6 inch, just as accurate as the flat top but doesn't fit my hand as well. I would love to see a gp-100 come up at a reasonable price.

I have three 44 specials, well two in my possession. Never let your son try out your favorite pistol. I have two 4" Taurus adjustable sighted 5 shots and a Ruger 5" GP100. I wish the Ruger was a 4 1/4" stainless like my 10mm GP100. My son shot my first Taurus and conned my out of it once I bought a 5" 629. I missed the Taurus and when I couldn't find another I bought the Ruger. Well after I bought the Ruger I found another Taurus on Gun Broker. The second shoots cast as well as the first, but doesn't seem to like jacketed loads like the first one did.

Very nice indeed!

Some years back, I found a 6.5" barreled 624 and that was the start of a quest.Next up was a 24-3 with the 3" barrel with the round butt and the combat grips. And last was another 24-3 with the 4" barrel. Still have all 3 and love shooting them. My Ruger 44 magnum has been resting quietly in the safe. probably have about 1K rounds through the Ruger. The 44 special cartridge has quiet a following over at the S&W forum. Frank
I’ve got an old N-Frame 44 Special. An old cop gun from the Houston PD. It’s a 44 Hand Ejector 3rd Model. Also called Model of 1926. This one was bought through Wolf and Klar in 1931. the Houston PD ordered 300 and had S&W stamp issue numbers on the back straps.
This one has some carry wear but is in very good shape. Shoots great. There are prettier 44’s but this one has soul.

It does look nice but by the time you pay the $40shipping and the FFL fee, you will have over $1500 in it and that is a bit much for a 44 with a Hillary hole, IMHO. I have seen 24-3's for $1K at gun shows locally. I am aware that the $400 days are gone forever but if you keep looking diligently you can buy one for less. Of course this is coming from a notorious cheap skate but I also gave $700+ $30 shipping +$15 for the FFL for my nickle 24. $300 out the door for the hand ejector in 2009.Attachment 302968Attachment 302969
Whatever you choose to do, the 44 spl will quickly become a favorite. A Lyman 429421 and 6.5 gr of Unique make that older 44 into the best shooting 44 S&W I own.
