    What’s your plan this season

My second season casting for 308 Winchester, my plan is to keep all my shots under 100 yards. I’ve worked up loads for the 150 fnhp from M&P molds and the Lee 170 fn using IMR 3031 and reloader7. Pushing them both around the 2000-2100 fps (according to the recipe) before accuracy falls off. I really need a chronograph! Alloy is 50/50 wheel weights and pure lead with a pinch of tin bar with every full pot of lead.14-16 bhn
I’d be really interested in your 30 caliber adventures success or fails. Deer picture was from last year my first 308 cast harvest with a neck shot.

My plan is to get a deer with handgun this year. Blackhawk 44 special. Nothing particular about the load. I might use my 4.8 bullseye / 44-250-k or might go with the skeeter load. I’m comfortable with the former and shots won’t be over 60 yards. I ain’t practiced with the skeeter load or anything nearly that warm in quite some time. Broadside I’m told will be fine with a standard 44 special. My 44-250-k ready to load comes in at 262 using ww alloy. 265 using 50/50 ww/soft. Both with a pinch of tin.

I don’t have any cast up but need to for 30-30. 31141. I might use that second if I get some cast. Course I do have about 8-10 from the last batch. I already have a load worked up enough. But I’m not confident with it yet. Bringing down a deer would raise the confidence level however. Course at hand dart range.... bout anything will suffice.

This bullet with red dot is doing great out of my H&R 158 Topper I plan to use it too this year. The recovered bullet was shot into 24 inches of folded wet denim and penetrated 20 inches at 50 yardsClick image for larger version.

Interesting, picked up a pound of red dot yesterday, need some recipes for 30/30 and maybe BO. Thinking maybe WSF for the BO also. I use Imr4895 mostly in 308, run about 2200. Got good results with harder alloy @ 2400 in AR10. Might try WD your alloy?
Got a Magnetospeed V3 I'm interested in selling. Got my loads worked out so no more use for it. PM me if interested.
    Whatever!

If that is 13 gr of RD, DO NOT DO IT. That is overpressure in the .30/30. Max is about 9 gr of RD with 150-170 gr bullets

Lyman 457122 loaded over 30gr of 5744 fired from my Sharps or 1886 Browning 45-70. Cast them of 96/2/2 to try this year, previously used 30/1. Loaded one to 1100fps over Unique and shot it into water. Front half fragmented with most of the pieces weighing 30-40 grains. The base weighed 186 grains and was expanded to .530". As cast weight 337 grains. FWIW the 30/1 boolits would fragment on very close 20-30 yard shots on deer with multiple exit wounds. 1100fps corresponds to 150 yard impact velocity with my load, farther than I will shoot. Shots are generally 75 yards or closer. Water is much harder on bullets than deer and I expect this load to perform in a satisfactory manner on our small central TX whitetails.

Sadly I ain’t got no Reddot. I’ve been running 31141 full throttle with w748 and 3031. 28 grains of 3031 gets me the same poi as factory 170s but 27 was a bit more accurate, though a sight notch lower.

I have the lee 309-150-f I’ve played with some, but ain’t really worked any loads up. I am wanting to work up a mid range load with it. Something strong enough for deer but light enough to plink with all day without the gun getting too hot. Maybe 4227? My choices are a bit limited right now.

And I have the 311-93-1r but ain’t worked with it much. I’m thinking bullseye here. But not much reason, as small game ain’t legal here in my state with centerfire, and I have (and can replace) plenty of 22lr.

My thoughts at the moment are to carry the muzzleloader all season. I've got a stash of the 50 cal 250gr Lee REAL bullets on the bench that I cast up this summer. They should work fine on these smallish AL deer. My stand gives me maybe 75 yards shooting, so it's a good match for the gun. I plink with the muzzleloader throughout the year but it seems I always grab the 308 when I head to the woods. I have yet to harvest a deer with a smoke pole.

Then again, it would be a good spot to hunt with the handgun. And that old Blackhawk just loves to go hunting. Decisions, decisions.

I did a test of 28,29,and 30 grains 28 being most accurate and groups opened up really quick at 29 and more at 30Click image for larger version.

4227 is an excellent choice for 150 grain 308

I don't refer to a successful hunting trip as harvesting.
That's some PC nonsense for hoping people who hate you will hate you a little less if you bend over backwards trying not to offend them.
As I've gotten older, and seeing how pointless it was----I now try to give them the chance to not offend me.

    I'm a big fan of 3031 in .308 with a hard cast 170 RNGC.
I can't remember the charge, but it's pretty close to max. from the Lyman book.
I shot and killed two deer with that load when they walked by in front of my Springfield M1A a little inside of 100 yards.
Neither took another step, and the wound channel looked like a golf ball went through it.
I didn't recover the boolit, but there were no Lead fragments in the meat. I figure it pretty much stayed intact.

Back when I used to hunt, I usually carried a Rem 700 with the same 170 and either 3031 or 13gr of Red Dot.
I had the same results with it. All were instant kills.
I took the M1A one year because I'd had it awhile and hadn't killed anything with it.

Alloy is 50/50 wheel weights and pure lead with a pinch of tin bar with every full pot of lead.14-16 bhn
    ?????

I don't see how WW plus pure lead can be anywhere near that hard. My current stash of WW runs about 12.5 BHN, with no softeners.

RD has become one of my CB go-to powders for several calibers including 308, 30/30, and 270. If memory serves, 10 gr. has performed well in my 30/30 with 155 gr RFGC's.

I could be wrong but I’m pretty good (I think) at using the set of labeled pencils. That’s just my personal findings.

I stopped reading at 'neck shot'... To each his own.

Me too... since it was the last words in the post.

Is there some reason neck shots aren’t sufficient or ethical?

    Yeah, I know.
I remember when the term along, and using the word 'weapon' came along.
Everybody was all worried about what the purple haired, non-achieving, mouth breathers thought.

Anyway, good luck with your harvesting this season.
Gosh I hate saying that word.
