Doesn't ook much worst than my Katrina guns and I have been able to clean them up, but I am installing new barrels!
Oven cleaner is great for removing years of Wisconsin dirt from the stock. The buttplate screws required some oomph to remove-they are so rotten that they're getting tossed.
I'm not shooting for factory new appearance; just a clean usable rifle.

That’s a great idea using oven cleaner to remove years of oil from the stock.
I got the oven cleaner tip from a guy at a gun show years ago. His milsurp rifles were always the cleanest ones. It removes cosmoline better and safer than the old paintbrush and gasoline method!
I used oven cleaner on my DCM Garand.
I then sanded to smooth it up and then BLO.
There's still some pepper, but I'm seeing some improvement on the action.
It'll be fun teaching her to shoot it; a 511 is what I learned with.

I search for rifles like that. Once in a while they are beyond repair, but it's surprising how many can be saved. Especially if you are not looking for a Turnbull Renovation kind of result. Time well spent.
I am seeing lots of improvement don't stop now. You are winning.
Little by little. About an hour filing and sanding today. The trigger guard is going to meet Mr. Dremel,, the concave inner bow is a tuffy.
The stock is very dark walnut. A few more coats of Tru-oil and I'll call it good.

Great project Thomas!

I will love the Lord with all my heart, all my soul, and all my mind.
I finished draw filing; and still sanding.....
And I removed pitting from the crown the easy way.

I decided to brown it because it looks right for an older gun- and it covers the remaining spots better than cold blue. I left the bolt body peppered rather than reducing its diameter. It matches my 510s patina- sort of. Now it looks like a used 1939 model 511 instead of an abused 1939 model 511. Fortunately, it still shoots like a 511- even an unmarked one....
Our friend loves it. She squealed every time that she hit a Dr. Pepper can; 9 out of 12 times.
She's taking it with her to show it to the donor when she visits- He "won't get it back" she says!
