She presented me with this 511 Remington that sadly spent a few decades in the back floorboards of her foster dad's work truck.
The action still works and the bore cleaned up a whole lot better than I thought that it would!

Draw file a little, then 180 grit shoeshine. Repeat till it looks suitable, then go to finer grits for the shoeshining. 320 grit can look pretty good but "to taste" is the best recommendation.

time for a barrel spinner and a band sander. By the time you get all the rust off it will probably be a pound lighter. Naval jelly would take some of it off.

Goodness gracious, that’s almost a candidate for glass bead blasting! Low pressure, it will take off just the rust and leave a very smooth finish! That’s the roughest one I’ve seen in a while. Good luck and pleas post after pictures, please, sir!

I've been down the road you're lookin' down about half a dozen times and I'll never go down it again. There's going to be pitting everywhere and you'll have to take a lot off to get rid of it all. Odds are the bore is damaged more than you think so even if you clean everything else up it'll probably only shoot mediocre at best. Best of luck to you.

Unless there is a lot of sentimental value to your friend, I'm guessing you will end up with way more time and material cost than what the rifle is worth. I do understand doing a labor of love though.

This is for a dear friend of ours-so time and cost to me doesn't matter. Labor of love it is.
At least the bore is good. Offhand at ten yards it shoots better than I can hold it.

I did one that was in a rifle case when the shingles blew off the roof in a hurricane, we had another hurricane so soon that it went unnoticed for a few months. it had the weave of the cloth from the inside of the gun case etched into the receiver barrel and magazine tube. I sand blasted it (not glass beads) twice and after that it was what it was. It got KG guncoat applied and baked. the bore was so dirty it was perfect when i cleaned it. My friend that gave it to me died of a heart attack a few years latter, and his son wanted it back, so back it went. It was a post 64 Winchester 94, and the most accurate one i have ever shot. Be patient with the 511 and it will be her treasure.
