    38-55 Long Range Bullet

At the Quigley this year, the second place overall winner was shooting a Miroku Winchester 1885 in 38-55. What bullet do you recommend for black powder and distances out to 800 yards? As an aside, the shooter was an amazing 13 year old girl. Kudos to her.

ha ha I've shot at the Q using a 38-55. A normal 275 will hit the Buffalo consistently as long as the wind behaves. 300 grns on up are better if your twist will handle them.. You posted an 1895, did you mean '85?
I think that is just hilarious. Back in the '80'3 and '90'S nobody thought a 38 would shoot that far except those of use who actually owned them and shot them. They became known as "girly guns".
No swollen shoulder for me, thank you very much, ha ha ha

I shoot a 305 gr. RNFP from a Taylor & Co. Highwall (made by Uberti) with 1-18 twist. Have never shot past 500 yds. with this rifle/boolit combination but, off sandbags, it will hold 2 MOA or better so long as I do my part. Unfortunately, mold for this boolit is an old, old NEI single-cavity (one of Walt's 'specials' I believe) and the folks currently running NEI say they have no record of the catalogue number stamped on the mold. However, boolit design is almost identical to the Accurate 38-300MG except my old NEI is plain-base rather than GC.

The guy that I bought my 38-55 Cowboy from, used to use his to shoot out to 600+ yds regularly, and even out to 900 on a few occasions.
He shot a 260 gr. bullet sized to .381, over some IMR 4198.
