I sure wish I could find 4198 around here. Haven't seen it for years...

At first, I thought the OP was asking if 4198 could be used for REDUCED loads in .243 with the 100 gr. projectiles. I was about to make a pitch for using H4895 and the 60% rule.
Ordinarily, I'D expect H4198 to be entirely too fast-burning to get ANY sort of safe results from the .243, but if the propellant makers are publishing data for it...

4198 is a better powder for reduced loads in 243 Winchester than 60% of 4895, at least I and Remington think so. You will get a pretty clean burn with the 4198 and probably not with the 4895. Many folks don't know this but 2400 was originally marketed as a rifle powder and it is faster than 4198. I use the manual referenced above for many cartridges and have great success with them all. IMR 4227 is my favorite and is a good replacement for SR4759. I load my 308's and 30-06's to mimic 30-30's with it and they all do well. My 338 Winchester is very enjoyable with a 215 jacketed Sierra and 4227. I couldn't handle very many full house loads in 338 Winchester.
So, if one powder is better than another by whose opinion and what criteria are they being measured? If 4198 was all I had and needed to load a 243 with 100 grain bullets I would proceed. I don't think the deer or whatever will ever notice and I know the paper targets won't.
    Good Luck,
    Rick

Our Sportsman's gets it in on a regular basis. I've bought 6lb since Jan. Have enough now that I don't buy it when it shows up, like it did again last week. Same with 3031.

Thanks for the tip. Sportsman's is one of the few places that ever has any powder, even more so than Cabela's. My LGS actually has more powder and primers than Cabela's.
