    Percussion Caps!!!!

Hello all, I have just recently got into black powder shooting. I started with a Kentucky rifle kit and then moved to a 1860 army replica. In my area there are no percussion caps at all available and I can't even find any online for sale. Where are they!! I don't understand why they are so hard to find. Do any of you guys know where I might be able to order some in stock that is a real website and not a scam? I know you can buy the kit and make them and all but honestly I don't have the time for that. Thanks for the help.

you have 2 choices, go to a gun show and pay through the nose or learn and make your own, its not that hard.

I’ve never timed myself, but I can make 50 caps in 15-20 minutes tops. They work very well also.

Watch for local estate sales and auctions. I’ve picked up primers from estates where the sellers had no idea of current pricing.

I make my own Caps with a 22lr reloader forming tool.
Back in the 70's and 80's , I made my own Caps from a tool I made out of a block of wood and a couple punches.
Back then I used Toy Caps to load them.
Now I use Prime All compound either mixed to H48 or F42 ratios.
They are reliable and not hard to make.
    Trust me,
Making your own Caps is well worth the investment in both tools , material and your time.

What state are you in? We have caps here, they are just expensive.

    @725.
    Look up 22 reloader site.
Or some others use a Tap a Cap tool off the net.
22 reloader also sells the Prime All compound.
That is also used in reloading rimfire ammo.
I also reload some 22 shorts and LR.
    I live in Az.
Since I have some caps , and make my own from time to time , I don't shop for the primers too often.
But others around here say they can't find any at all.

Thanks, I live in NC and there is absolutely no number 10 or 11 caps to be found anywhere. You can find all the musket caps that you could possibly want but that doesn't do me much good on my revolver. I watched some videos about making some last night and just went ahead and ordered the punch and the prime all. Looks like if I want to shoot my black powder that's what it's gonna take.

I ordered some a couple of weeks ago. A few days later I got a refund saying they were out of stock. Looks like the shortage goes beyond North America.

be careful with the "prime all" i believe its the corrosive version of priming compound. fyi you can use it to reload regular primers as well.

Last year I had a table at a gun show and had 3 tins of unopened # 11 caps on my table for $ 2 ea. and no one even looked at them. Now with primers and caps and rimfire blanks costing crazy prices I will just keep them.
My muzzleloading these days are a smokeless 45 cal. shooting a saboted 40 cal. W/ 209’s and a homemade under hammer 58 cal. that uses musket caps.

Percussion caps are non-existant. I bought a percussion revolver awhile back, and was able to stumble across ONE tin of percussion caps. Only one tin of 100 caps. I used about 50 of those caps and then put the gun away. Finally gave up and bought a conversion cylinder for it, and now I can enjoy the gun again, but it ain't the same.

If using the 22 reloader punch I've had better success using a heavy duty aluminum foil pan as a source as opposed to soda cans. The soda cans tended to slip/twist in the process and yield unusable cups. I found that a disposable aluminum baking pan from the grocery store (or clean up an empty frozen lasagna pan) works very well with a high percentage of usable cups from the get-go.

Its corrosive in the sense that the salts from perchlorate will be hygroscopic and absorb water from the air. It will then corrode the metal. Its like bp fouling from what i understand they both need cleaning after shooting.

I agree. A good old rock lock solves the whole problem.
