    welding wire for snares?

I'm no expert but have been looking into how to make wire snares.
I have a 30 pound spool of .030" bronze welding wire and thought maybe it might work for rabbits, squirrels, woodchucks maybe.
.030" would put it somewhere between 20 and 22 gauge I believe

Would probably work fine, although I think most folks tend to use stainless. I can't see any reason why bronze wouldn't work.

I have used snares in the past and my only caution is that they are nonselective, like most traps. I set some snares for coyotes one year and accidentally caught a doe going under a fence; switched to live traps after that.

If it's flexible enough, it should work, but it might be a little on the thick side.
All of the welding wire I've used is pretty stiff.

Welding wire is not flexible enough , if you use picture hanging cable it would work for what the OP stated.

Best wire for snares except for real snares, is picture hanging wire. It is supple, but will hold its shape. Being multi stranded, there is a lot less chance for the animal to kink it back and forth and break. Works great on squirrels, rabbit cats and other similar sized animals. For bigger animals it’s best to get a real snare. The double wire is twisted in opposite directions on the inside than the outside. That way it is impossible to untwist it no matter which way they twist it. If you catch a front leg with the neck, it’s amazing how fast and long they can spin in circles.

If you are looking to get into snaring 7x7 or 1x19 in 5/64th or 3/32nd cable works the best. If you shop around, cable prices are not too bad. I have been using 1x19 in 5/64th with either a dakota low pro lock or a micro lock. I target mostly coyote and red fox.

I make my own snares and use them for beaver, coon , coyote. Have caught badger and red fox in them when set for coyote in the fence line. I use 7x7 of 3/32 cable I use cam locks and washer locks mainly and sure locks . I make all my snares the same length and just add extension to them.
