If you got it for free then it's not too bad I would just duplex a charge of some three or four at the head of it and then put in my charger minus a grain or two oh, but I did not like that American Pioneer powder hard to light off and very large grain size as compared to other black powder substitutes of the same f size.

A relative of mine loaded thousands of rounds of cartridges with APP in a progressive reloading press. It ran fine except there were a lot of "fines" (dust) that kept gumming up the works requiring occasional cleanings. In shotgun and rifle/pistol cartridges it works great.

Why not just use all real BP and not worry about it? Easier than duplexing loads.

Whenever I hear people say that I figure they live in the magical land of unicorns and pink berries because there is no where around here I can buy real black powder. And ordering powder is a whole mess in itself since after you order it they wait a couple weeks and then decide to tell you when they're going to ship it and then you have about a two-day window for that shipping and I have to choose my days off work 6 weeks in advance so therefore I'm not staying home on a whim to wait for a guy to deliver me some powder therefore I'm stuck by black powder alternatives like 98% of the country is.

The two times I ordered powder that's what happened to me. Totally *****. I lost alot of money taking off work randomly until I finally just had to give it up and not order any more powder.

Clearshot was discontinued after the explosion/fire at the manufacturing facility and, no, it's not coming back. Too bad, in my view. With energetic ignition, it works fine. Not so much with a #11 cap that has to get the fire around a few corners in the flash channel. A few grains of BP put in first fixes the problem. After Clearshot was discontinued, GOEX contracted with American Pioneer Powder to produce GOEX Pinnacle. Like American Pioneer, it's very compressible (a boon for revolver shooters who get just a bit much in the chamber - you can still get the ball all the way in) and some compression greatly improves the velocity. You'll have to experiment with how much in cartridges or a C&B revolver, but a Ruger Old Army with a 250gr RNFP roared like a Super Blackhawk, though I don't know what the guy's load was other than it was GOEX Pinnacle 3f and the boolits were seated just below the face of the cylinder to keep compression consistent. The performance of APP 2f in a revolver were really anemic, but the stuff was given to me, was old stock and I had to break up the chunks in the container. Not sure how badly it suffered before I got it. I duplexed it with some real 3f BP and that made it usable, but still nothing to write home about. Two other plusses I noticed about APP; unlike Pyrodex or 777, there was no hint of initiating corrosion and the fouling really is water-soluble. All of it comes off with just water, but generally, I do add a bit of dish soap because of the lubes I use. BTW, with the black powder substitutes, you don't have to use BP-compatible lubes. Lubes for smokeless won't cause any trouble or haven't so far.

Thanks, I'll give it a try when the weather cools. I hope to find some extra caps by then.

APP is basically the same formula as Black MZ. Likes lots of compression to perform well.

Yeah.. it was crazy.. bought the 3fg and opened it up at the range to use and thought I had grabbed rifle powder instead. I didn't care for it. I shot 1 cylinder full in a revolver and then closed it up.

My shooting group did black powder revolver.. everyone had one but one guy and his money was thin due to some work issues. we all chipped in and got him a used black powder revolver from a gun show and some gear. we found him a good used brass frame colt style 44 for 50$ , I gave him the app powder. another guy gave him a tin of caps. I was casting balls in .454 at the time so I gave him a bag of balls. I also made him a brass powder scoop/measure out of some rifle brass/solder/copper wire, and make him a nipple cleaner out of some guitar string. We all chipped in so basically only cost us a few bucks each.. and when we would do smoke poles at the range, he had something to shoot. So.. the APP got used.. just not by me... I don't care for it.
