30.06 My all time favourite for cast boolts.

Just finshed a 'build' on another cast boolit shooter chambered for the 30.06. Getting results easily, especially in any rifle so chambered, has always netted good results.

My 3 main rifles are an Winchester M17 (3/17), a Springfield A3 (8/44) and I am stll waitng to range test my latest.

The 30-06 is never a mistake- and it’s still a wonderful all around hunting cartridge.
Looks to be shooting well- what alloy and flavor of load?
After years of playing around with different cartridges including a strong dalliance with Weatherby mags - my old stand by 06 has gotten a new stock and new piece of glass and is ready to carry me through my hunting career and by passed down to my son. It’s also a great cast shooter.

my grandpap, dad, uncle, my brother, son and me had alot of '06. grandpap and dad had rem m760s, uncle had rem m7600, my brother had a rem m700adl. my son has my grandpap's rifle, while i have my dad's. i've had a rem m700 a, b and cdl and a mountain rifle and a savage m116 in '06. i think i had another savage m110, but i'm not too sure. i have a sporterized Japanese type 99 in '06 too, but i'm on the fence to send it to JES or not.

I don't do anything special for case preparation other than unifying the primer pockets and trim to length. Sizing cast boolits to 0.310" in a case that has thin necks means that unlike 7mm, 308W and 8mm, I don't have to neck turn in order to uniformly release the boolit.

Of all the tests that I have conducted powder loads that fill at least 50% of the case give the best results. My powder of choice is IMR (or equivilant) 31.5gns gives 1740FPS to the Lyman 311284(208gns).

Can't wait to get range time with the latest build.

a 10 round group at 100 yards from my push feed win model 70 with a 4X leupold
311290 at 2,200 fps. Felix lube. 40 grains IMR 4895.
I spent a lot of time and effort with that load. Gas checks were annealed, boolits are hardened WW and sizing is .3105" measured from a saeco. Nothing special about the brass other than it's federal from a single lot.

Nice group! What does your 311290 weigh?

Oh hey. Sorry. I didn’t see the question.

They average 212 grains naked from my single cavity mould. The NOE group buy was based off my Lyman mould. They’re averaging 218 grains from my 4C NOE.

Funny thing is, I’m still casting the majority of them from my Lyman SC. I put a KAL sprue plate on it and it’s one of those moulds that’s almost magical, dropping perfect boolits every time.

I think you need to expand on your post. How many rounds and at what distance?

My model 70 30-06 featherweight is a cast only shooter now, I also prefer IMR 4895, but I'm only at 28grs. I shoot the Saeco #315 bullet as cast and am very happy with the results. Excellent cartridge for cast.

Pirate69, that is 3 shots at only 40yds.
I need to stretch it out to 100 and see if I can run with the old hands above and their oughtsixes!
My load is the Lee C309170F cast from seine weight/ range scrap, PC and sized .309" over 26grs of 4198 using Remington 9-1/2M primers because I have a bunch of them.

The 30-06 is never a mistake as said. The M-70 Winchester is great as is the 03 Springfield. And I love IMR 4895. I mostly shoot a clone of the RCBS 30-180-FN.

My family has been enjoying a Rem 700 for the past several years. Most of my kids have learned to shoot rifle with that---lots of grins and giggles. Now my youngest son loads 31141 over 20 grains 2400 for his deer hunting. I load NOE 311299 over 16 grains 2400 for fun.
I'm not sure where all the money is that I've "saved" by casting and reloading!

The local powder is known as 2206H but data for IMR3031 can be substituted.
