    Revolver bullet nose length?

When ordering a custom mold, what clearance do you allow between the bullet nose and overall cylinder length? I wouldn’t think a bullet nose even with the forward end of the cylinder is desired since any bullet jump can tie up the cylinder. How much clearance is good? 0.010”? 0.020”? Some other value?
    TIA
    Matt

I design my bullets to have 0.025 clearance when seated and crimped in a max. length case. Most of these are .44 or .45 bullets over 200 grains which have substantial recoil in full charge loads. In a lighter decoupling gun you may get away with less.

I too shoot for .020 or .025". An exception might be something like a Ruger single 7. They have a super short cylinder, and 327 federal has no problem with bullets jumping. I'd be willing to go .010" or maybe even .005" on that.

I had Veral at LBT make me a 300 gr. LFN bullet for my 454 Casull FA-83 that has .015" clearance from the front of the cylinder. I use a heavy crimp and have not had any problems with a cylinder hangup in over 9,000+ rounds.

I prefer sufficient clearance to ensure that a little tolerance error in bullet seating will not cause lockup or any drag on the face of the forcing cone. Any amount of clearance that leaves the bullet entering the forcing cone before the bullet completely leaves the case should work though.
