Thread: Is Your Favorite Leveraction Cartridge Listed In Winchester's 1895 Catalog?

Is Your Favorite Leveraction Cartridge Listed In Winchester's 1895 Catalog?

With black powder still in full force and smokeless powder now starting, I was wondering if your favorite Winchester leveraction cartridge was listed in Winchester's 1895 catalog, and if so...which one.

Although I have a great love for the 44-40 black powder loads, I have grown very close to the history of the original smokeless loads of that time era.

Since the leveraction postal match died a rather quick death, I might try one for these old girls, minus modern design scopes.

I have to go to the caliber 50-100-450. I shot our's more last time north than any other levergun.
Half the time was with smokeless duplicating the BP load as I did not want to use my last 3 pounds of Goex on steel. And when I had the rifle out 50 to 100 rounds went down the tube.

You might add to the Savage series others have mentioned the 243 win, 22 high power, 250-3000, 303 savage 358 win.

Wouldn't the 25-35 and .30WCF be in that catalog- since they were introduced in 1895?
38-55 is my favorite ( and only)lever action rifle at present; it should be listed as it was one of the two original cartridges for the new 1894 Winchester rifle.

well, i'm going to have say no cartridges are available, so no. if it were my choice, it would be either 30-40 krag or the 405 win. i'd also wildcat 30WCF to 35/30-30.

I always did like the 30-40 Krag but...... The 405 wasn't available until 1904 and the 35 didn't come around till 1903. For whatever it's worth, the Model 1895 didn't come out in the 1895 catalog....go figure.

However, the 1895, as we all know, was the leader for all of our current box magazine rifle cartridge.

This is somewhat the reason I stopped at the 1895 catalog

I have my Great Grandad's '94 32-40 in my safe. The serial number puts it at 1897 vintage. It's in beautiful condition.

When I click on the link, I just see the postal match info..... so I'm confused...no Winchester 1895 catalog......
    But that's not unusual
    For me to be confused.

That is because the link is for the postal match information. HOWEVER, At the link, there is some trajectory information on the cartridges out to 300 yards. The cartridges in BOLD are still manufactured by Winchester and and their trajectories charted in each "Class" for those interested. Here it is again

No link to the 1895 catalog

mine is 45/75 ---its listed in a later catalog - dont have the front cover or date but it quotes "number of motor cars in use-54" so likely 1910 or in there someplace. Only one loading quoted - 75 grains of Blackpowder and 350 grain boolit.

Back in the day Winchester loaded a 450 grain pp boolit over 90 grains of powder for the 1876 - (target load for single loading) -- kind of put paid to the idea that the '76 was not strong enough to shoot the military 45/70 round - they just couldnt fit it in the action as a repeater was the problem. I think I would be quite happy to take on a trapdoor with a single loaded '76 - not a lot in it but I back the winchester.!

I shoot a 460 grain pointy grease groove boolit in mine over 75 grains of FF homemade (no more will fit in the 348 derived brass) --only problem is once you load it you committed to firing - or have to spring the extractor up over the case rim to get the loaded round out of the action

Do you have a favorite leveraction cartridge that is listed in the 1895 catalog?

I am not sure, was hoping some of that stuff would get discussed. The cartridge is listed but not for the 1886...hmmmmm I may have goofed on a few others too.

I think I missed the 38-70-255, 38-56-255 for the Model 1886...and I may have added a few that shouldn't be there
