    More Lyman 525 testing

I revisited this slug simply because the only data I ever used was the first time I loaded these using STS hulls, real WAA12 wads, and 25 grains of Herco. Only moving around 1230-1250 fps, but I got one hole accuracy at 50 yards through my USH.

One thing I’d like to note is I don’t use any filler in the base. I strongly believe it’s unnecessary and the “collapsed skirt” people talk is probably due to base distortion imparted on the skirt upon impact.

Also, every one of my wads were mangled, however accuracy was good. No nitro card were placed under the slug in each load I tested.

    1st group:

    Lyman 525 Slug
    37 grs of longshot
    Federal 12S3 wad
2.75” low brass new Fiocchi hull
    Fold crimp
    Savage 212
    50 yards
    1490 fps.
    5 shot group

    2nd group:

    Lyman 525 Slug
??? Grs of SR4756 (what ever the Lyman book said. I forgot to label these)
    CB clone of WAA12R wad
2.75” low brass new Fiocchi hull
    Fold crimp
    Savage 212
    50 yards
    1420 fps.
    4 shot group.

    Note the keyhole shot.

    3rd group:

    Lyman 525 Slug
    32 grs of 800X
    Federal 12S4 wad
2.75” low brass new Fiocchi hull
    Fold crimp
    Savage 212
    50 yards
    1430 fps.
    5 shot group

Recovered wads wads are tore up pretty bad and the slug skirts have slight distortion from what I believe is due to the impact of the hard clay berm:

The gas seals on the CB wads will be a little smaller in diameter since they are made for tapered hulls.

Correct. Not sure why I’d didn’t add an OS card over the powder. However, it didn’t affect anything.

That’s close to how I load mine but have found improved accuracy with hot glue filled cavities. Conclusion is they like to be run hot. Book says 39 gr Longshot in Fed hull but that’s uncomfortable so I load 36. Not a pig Texas or Georgia can hold ‘em. BTW I’ve got the Mihec clone in a 2 cavity brass that’s a great mold. I have loaded hundreds of Fiocchi's with CB WW clone wads for Sporting Clays where I can't pick up my hulls. They worked fine in the extruded straight walled hulls.

That is super accuracy for a slug gun ! Good as my RB from .58 rifled ML !

Be sure to keep the plastic wadding out of your barrel, which greatly enhances group size! A little motor mica on the wad goes a long way in keeping the wadding out of the barrel.
