Henry single shot 45-70 load pressure

Henry single shot 45-70 load pressure
Just for your information, I wrote Henry about what pressure reloads for the 45-70 were safe. I am buying one soon. Here is what they said.

We're unable to comment on handloads as their use technically voids our Warranty terms but I can confirm our model H015-4570 falls into the 1895/modern lever category for action strength.

It will safely handle all commercial .45-70 loads except those that are listed "For Ruger No 1 Only."

At least he let you know what level of loads were safe.

The finest pressure evaluation tool for those single shots is your shoulder. Recoil is brutal as you reach the higher loads. I, too, shoot a single shot .45-70 and have never found it necessary to hot rod it. I can not think of a single incident where a second shot was required to anchor game. YMMV, but I've done very well with the higher loads listed for trap door. Brass lasts longer, too. Enjoy your single shot.

I agree, I have had Ruger no.1 and 3 rifles. I was after the Marlin loads, I wanted to be sure it would handel them safely. I use the black powder velocity loads for practice and the lower marlin loads for hunting.

Did Henry fix the very heavy trigger pull in their single shot rifles? I remember that cocking the hammer required extreme effort.

Your shoulder will go before the rifle. Just sayin’.

The recent models with the trigger upgrade are marked V2 on the box and have a small dimple in the trigger guard. I've got three V2's and one of the older versions that was sent in for the recall. All of them have clean breaking 3 1/2 to 4 lb. pulls. You don't need to be a champion thumb wrestler to cock the hammer anymore either!

A few years ago, I was instructed by Henery and Marlin, to stay in the trapdoor range.

Just something to keep in mind: the "trapdoor range" will kill a buffalo, and is also used for long range target shooting. There's no need to hot-rod a 45-70.
