    Rimmed from rimless case conversion.

Years ago I read an article on how some of the old cases can be bought back alive putting a rim on a rimless case and then re working them.

Well it took me all day and attempt number five.
    I made one.
It is for my 7.62x33r which is a necked down 357 mag case to 30 cal.
    Rimmed 300 blk short thing
Which was a wild cat that the whisper was based on.
So if I can pick up some 300 blk cases I could put a rim on them and shorten them 70 thou.
Or use 357 max cases or 223R cases.
The case I used is a 223 range pick up.

Fire formed and neck turned so the thick brass can hold a boolit.

    Why.
Well because I wanted too see if I could.
Any one else put rims on rimless cases?

    Thnx

Assume you soldered a washer onto the rimless case?

I haven't yet but, I haven't had the need or desire. I have turned off more than a few rims.

I did something similar, used 223 cases to form rimmed cases for the Moisin-Nagant revolver several years ago.

Took a little more swaging of the body above rim, then turning off the excess brass.

But it worked. I did it before I bought the Moisin-Nagant, I wanted to make sure that I could have a supply of brass before I bought the revolver in case the commercial supply chain dried up.

I'm glad brass is still readily available, forming them is a pain

    Sorry.
No I parted off a ring of brass from a 30-30 case after drilling the primer hole out to the right size.
I made a die and a end cap.
One end of the die has a 45 deg taper and the other flat.
The die hole fits the case reasonably neat and the cap was machined to the diameter of the brass ring that was cut of at a depth of about 60 thou deep and the ring of about 170 thou wide.

I first tried swaging the rim /ring on the case but didn’t really work.
I next attempt nearly worked was to anneal the ring soft by turning bright red under a flame .
First using the 45 tapered end to swayed partly the brass into the extractor cut and then turn the die over and use the square end to help force it further,
I used my vise and a cheater bar for this.

This worked and after I machined the rim to correct diameter and thickness put it thou the sizing die.

Extracting the case, ripped the soft brass though the shell holder.

So for the next attempt I just annealed the ring it like a case neck.

    Worked and flowed well.
    Machined good.

The brass is shortened to 1.300" but the neck is thick and needed neck turning.
So this time I took the expander plug out.
I’m not sure if I could use the expander plug on the die as I think that is why the rim on the other got ripped.

I annealed the neck then neck turning then put it back through the fls die with the expander in place and then fire formed it with some powder and the wife’s breakfast cereal like cream of wheat.

    Already for some real testing.

I have heard of c clips being used and I may see if I could get some the right size.

    May be an easier way.
    For sure.

Ahhh ghee 2 more posts by the time I could type up a jibberish reply.
    Ha
It’s lucky I can read let alone type or spell.

For adding a rim to a rimless case I am sure there are many ways to do it and the simpler the better.
I have heard of using C clips and if you could find them in a useable size and maybe only need to grind a tool bit to cut a groove to snap them into would be great.
I know some of the antique calibers used very large or very thick rims so those would need to be turned and attached somehow to the case. I have used hi strength green loctite for a few projects and find it has great strength and might work. I have 2 lathes and both are larger sized and would work but for turning cartridge cases and small rings with rims that would be ideal for the mini lathes you can buy like the small 7 x 10” models that can cut threads.

I make 300 BLK Rimmed out of 360 Dan Wesson Brass. It is easy to make. I just run the brass into the FL Die.

I've always admired you guys willing to do all that for keeping an old firearm on the job.

The closest I've got to needing that is a late 1800s Dan Wesson break top single shot in .32 rim fire.
I've looked at making it shootable with some form of fashion of case conversion.
Then I look at it and think, "Nah, this project ain't for me'.

I have made some 223 into 25-20 Sharps Straight, it takes a while.
    Oops!
    Should be 25-20 Single Shot.

Seems to me swaging something like PPC or X39 clan would be easier in a steel die .

I've done a little bit of 6.5x50 Japanese from 243 down to a semi rimmed case . A little wet lube , a half stroke , relube , full length , and trim the head bulge .
