    U. S. Grant's presentation pistols

Ulysses S. Grant’s Revolvers Bring $5.17M at Auction.

I expected them to go high but this was amazing.

I saw the price they went for and it was something else. I think that the price they went for was who they belonged to as opposed to what they were.

Here's a better link about the pistols themselves, with a few good photos. https://www.rockislandauction.com/ne...ney-at-auction

In the video running in the original link, I was most amused with Michael Korda's comment on on the drinking habits of Generals. He confirmed that President Lincoln ordered a barrel of whatever Grant was drinking sent to his other generals, and the interviewer asked what he thought todays Generals were drinking. He commented that whatever it was, they must be cutting it with water.

There is a video of the actual auction on RIA's YouTube channel.

I am sure the Grant provenance accounted for the majority of the money, but the fact that the pistols were engraved by Louis D. Nimschke, didn't hurt the price.

The maxim “Buy the gun, not the story” was certainly not in effect here! It would be nice for them to end up in public display in a museum somewhere. I wonder whether a single, private party put out that kind of. Indy, or whether it was some sort of consortium or combine? Strange things are happening in the money world these days.
