Furthest that a pistol has thrown brass?

While shooting some new loads today, I was amazed at how far the brass was thrown.

XDM 10mm. Last range session using 180 grain loads was impressive at 33 feet.

This time using 200 grain loads was astonishing at 45 feet.

No signs of over pressure or anything negative. I'm used to picking up brass within 15 feet or so with my 9mms and .40 S&W pistols.

Anyone else see a pistol throw brass so dang far?

in my experience, these were the effects of a powder that was too slow (and unsuitable for the 7.62 nato) and heavy bullets in a stg58 semiauto rifle.
I wish that's not your case_

    Wow!
Can you get any chronograph data on that brass?
    Ha!

That’s some serious slide velocity when the brass hits the ejector.
Might be the recoil spring is not up to the heavy loads.
I’d look at increasing spring weight a couple of pounds.

If you’re happy with the spring, you can file the front of the ejector back a little at a time until the brass is hitting the ejector closer to when the slide stops and is moving slower. But, over-do it and it might not eject well with lighter loads.

But, it might not be a problem. It might be cool thing throw your 10mm brass farther than most people shoot 9mm!

I can't believe how far my Shield 40 throws empties. Well over twenty feet. All of the CZ52 pistols that I had in the past would fling the empties WAY out there- but they were Berdan primed so I didn't care!

    Ho...
My son has two 10mm handguns.
They both throw brass an ungodly distance. I have never seen a 9mm, .40S&W or .45ACP pistol throw brass half as far as his 10mm pistols do.

In my old age I’m liking the black powder pistols more and more. With out conversion cylinders don’t even contend with brass. But there is trade offs, you get to clean that sucker a lot. If you make your own black powder, caps and pour your own boolits, cost is minimal also.

Now when I shoot the CZ75 9mm thats when the fun begins with watching where the group goes. Not too far though.

I have a 40 Firestar that seems to think it is a first-stage Saturn Rocket.

Neither the Colt SAA’s or S&W 686+’s have an issue.

    Stronger recoil spring, perhaps?

Before I changed the recoil spring on my Glock 22 40 S&W
It would throw ....Err Launch Winchester Ranger 180 gr HP brass 30+ feet
But that is a hot loading
I only shot less than a 50 rnd box before I changed to a new and higher pound recoil spring
As I knew that , that load was pounding on the pistol to much

But I also own a Hungarian made copy of the Browning HP
With almost all factory loads and reloads
It only throws brass 8 - 10 feet
But with Sellier and Bellot 124 gr FMJ ammo I bought a while back
It also Launched brass a LONG ways , never measured how far
I just stopped buying that ammo

I swear this is a true story, I was out shooting at the old range with my trusty 45 acp the brass flew so hard out it hit me on the left side of the head. Must have traveled the earth at least once for that to happen.

Of course it could have been the other shooter to the left of me but..

A long time ago when things were cheaper and I was dumber, I fired my Astra 600 with Canadian 9mm submachine gun ammunition. The ejection, to put it mildly, was brisk.

All of my Witness 10mm handguns throw the brass waaay, waaay out there. I mean in the 45 to 50 foot range, so I just shoot next the wall on the shooting bay and duck when the brass bounces back at me.

The S&W 1006 doesn't throw them as far, and the S&W 610 drops them into my hand.

My Springfield XDm in 10mm does throw the brass a ways, but not near as far as the Witnesses do. However, my 10mm AR throws it out there pretty good, too.

Another vote for the CZ-52 chambered in 7.62Tok. Mine seems to think spent brass is supposed to be sent to the next area code. At least you know she isn’t going to stove-pipe if you decide to limp wrist it!
