    Trapdoor Sight Alteration - opinions

    Another question.

I have a very nice Model 1884 Trapdoor. This thing is in great shape. The rear sight windage adjustment is a little loose and creeps around some but it is actually one of the better ones I have ever seen (although I am by no means any kind of expert). I have been playing around a little bit and have had some encouraging signs of developing a fairly accurate load for it.

Trouble is, I can barely see through that tiny little peephole on the fold up Buffington rear sight leaf. Under certain conditions I can't see the front sight at all. It is tiny too. Getting old.

I am wondering how much of a crime against humanity it might be to drill out that peephole a size or two. I feel like I would be able to see the sight better. Does anyone have any experience with this?

    Suggestions/advice appreciated.

Buffington sights can still be found, so drilling yours out isn't the end of the world. If you're worried then maybe find a replacement first, and then you'll have it or the original to drill out.

I drilled the peep hole in the Buffington sight larger and made an .093" wide front sight. It helped a lot but at 75 yrs old now not much helps anymore.
