    New 1860 Army

I finally stopped looking at them online and ordered me one. Its a pietta 1860 army. First impressions was the pistol looked good but was kinda gritty in the action. I took entire pistol apart and cleaned and lightly buffed out machine marks. Opened up rear rear sight so I could actually see through it. After all that now to find time to shoot it!!

Be very careful, they breed like rabbits! Hope you can find some Holy Black, just seems easier. Enjoy!

Old south firearms. They had some in stock when I got mine and where a little cheaper than anyone else online to.

Nice choice! I think you'll find that the action will smooth out even more as you put more rounds through it. ENJOY!

Now,as a companion piece how about a nice 1851 Navy or 1858 Remington or ...

Sounding like a broken record, if you get a Uberti be sure to correct the short arbor. Any of them can stand to be tuned and the timing corrected as well.

In addition to widening the hammer notch, I've taken to narrowing the front sight as well. Or replacing it entirely.

My 1860 shoots high (quite high) and left. I'd like to see some info on how you went about the front sight replacement. I've been contemplating this for a while but haven't gotten up the nerve to go at it.

    Any info appreciated.

The last one I replaced I made the sight from an old washer I dug out of my tool box. I pried the old sight out, it's in a circular cut in the barrel, fitted the cut off washer, made it look like a front sight, then press fitted and staked it in place. Pistol now shoots to point of aim.

Supposedly the originals were regulated to 75 yards if you chose to use the rifle butt stock. I solve the problem by putting a paster 10-12” below the X ring to allow most shots to strike the black at 15 yards.

Welcome to your new addiction. You may as well to ahead and get another 1860, because, slowly but surely, you'll develop the urge to have a brace of them.

I highly recommend the replacement nipples from Track Of The Wolf. They're made like the originals, and they completely eliminated cap sucking on my navies. They are also sized for #11 caps, such gives you a better seal, and the striking edge is very narrow, which gives reliable ignition.

Thanks for the info gentleman. I finally got around to shooting it today. That was the most fun I have had shooting in a long time. Running low on percussion caps, guess I'll have to start hunting around for them now lol. I worked on the hammer sight, got it shooting dead center and it was shooting about 4 inches high but now only 1 inch high at 20 yards. I will live with that. Can't wait to play with this pistol some more. I know what you guys are talking about it will make me want more. A 1861 navy in .36 is looking like a lot of fun!

Sorry to be so slow, long. Jackrabbit pretty much nailed it.
