    Lead Free Solder

I was replacing our home water shut off valve yesterday and got to wondering what Lead Free solder is composed of. Anyone know?

In the UK it is known as 99C for plumbing applications. That is, 99% Tin and 1% copper.

Various compositions, all of them 95% or better tin with the balance antimony, copper, silver… and I’m sure there are more.

Read the label on the spool or package. It will tell you the exact % contents. None of them will have Pb these daze.

Different brands will vary but the bulk of the "silver" metal in there is Sn, a harmless non-carcinogenic, friendly metal.

At the home owner, retail level, you'll probably only see 95/5.
The end of the spool will tell ya what's in it besides 95% Tin.

The other goodies mostly help make it handle temperature extremes better than pure Tin.

As I understand it they also help prevent tin whiskers.

It should be on the label, but with the way things are going, you may have to read the QR code with your phone to know.
