Did they ever make a full wadcutter for .44 or .45?

    Morning gents,

Just curious, do you any you happen to know, was there ever a full wadcutter made for the. 44 and .45 cal revolvers?

If so, does anyone have any mold numbers for them?

I'm going to be experimenting here soon with some .45 colt loads, and the idea of a full wadcutter sounds marvelous if such a creature exists...

    Many thanks,
    Tom

Tom, Lee Precision makes a mould for .44's and long ago B & M made one for that same caliber (It's a tack driver in my Ruger SBH), but I can't speak to the .45cal. offerings.

In 44 cal . , NOE Mould Numbers ... the middle number is weight in grains .

    432-107-WC PB
    432-149-WC PB
    432-153-WC PB
    432-215-WC PB
    432-226-WC PB

45 Cal. , NOE Mould Numbers ... middle number is weight in grains .
    454-251-WC PB
    454-264-WC PB
    454-273-WC PB

All are Wadcutter designs with Plain Base's ( can be cut for gas checks and hollow points )

In case any 41 Magnum / 41 Special fans are out there ... they make:
    412-140-WC PB and 413-215-WC PB .
I have the 215 WC and it is the most accurate boolit I've ever loaded in my
    S&W model 58 41 Magnum ... if you have a 41 Magnum ... take a look at this one .
I didn't know about the 140 grain WC ... that looks like a perfect 41 Special target boolit !

    Hey there everyone,

Very good on all counts, so they definitely do exist!!!

I'll take a look at the NOE offerings, I've heard excellent things about the molds they sell, could be fun to work up a few loads with a "jumbo" full wadcutter!!

    Appreciate the information here gents!!

Matt's Bullets - Highland, AR makes 'em. Might want to try them first to see if they are what you want. They make 'em up to a .430 250 grain WC.

I am assuming you cast. I have a 452460 mold I had reamed out longer and ended up with a .245 gr. wad cutter that works good. It groups plenty good at 25 yards but haven't had the time to go longer. A good machine operator should be able to close the mold and measure and make longer. The nose will be the o.d. of the inside lube grooves and longer and almost flat on the end. It should be real easy with an aluminum mold and low cost. Mine will also work in a 45acp but I had to trim the slide stop a little to keep the nose from rubbing on the first boolit installing the magazine. It's not a true wad cutter. I would show a photo but for some reason I can't post a photo on this forum. I have no problem on others. My shooting buddy just bought some dewc's for his 44 mag.

+1 on Matt's Bullets. Quality bullets and fast delivery. They will size bullets to your specs. They're a smaller boutique operation, so their prices are a bit higher.

Lee #429-208-WC was made back about 25+ years ago in a 2cav, and about 12yrs ago in a 6cav as a Group Buy here. An excellent bullet.
    Saeco #453 is a .452 - 225gr WC, it's the best bullet for .45 Auto Rim.
Lyman has also made .44 & .45 cal WC in the past too.
If you "cruise" ebay long & hard enough they will eventually turn up.
    The #429348 -180grs & #454309 - 235grs.

Lyman 454-309 roughly 235 gr with the original Lyman #2 (95-5-5). I always used. Wheel weights so the weight was a bit different. Great bullet.

I do take a round nose .430 solid base 250 grn. slug and reshape it in a swaging die to a wad cutter. I have been doing it for many years now. Works very well at our 2x4 shoot.

Never used that many wc's in the 45cal's but tried several 44cal wc's over the decades. Here's a picture of the last 5 I used to cast/use/shoot.
    [IMG][/IMG]

top left: lee 162gr button nosed wc
top center: special run 175gr double ended wc
top right: cramer nose pour 200gr type III wc
bottom left: Mihec 220gr hbwc (same mold as gamsec's)
bottom right: lyman 429352 245gr type III wc

Since taking the picture above I sold the 162gr, 175gr & 245gr molds. I still use the 220gr hbwc and the 200gr wc.

That cramer nose pour 200gr wc is the most accurate wc I've ever used in the 44cal's. Typical 25yd 6-shot groups.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Might not hurt to look at the different type III wc molds that are out there while you're at it.

    Hey there gents,

WOW! Thanks very much for all the information, and the photos also. I'll make a few notes about some of these mold numbers, and will start keeping an eye out for them.

    Really appreciate the help!

    Thanks again,
    Tom
