My Green Mountain 44-40 barrel has a 1-36" twist. I don't know if that's good or bad but it shoots Lee 200fn, 240TLswc, and 200 gr jhp bullets pretty well.

I have an 80's Marlin 1894 in .44 mag., microgroove, 1:38" twist.
Shoots cast boolits well but heaviest I have gotten decent accuracy with is 270 gr.
300 gr. "J" bullets and 300 gr. cast TC were keyholing at 100 yards. I've been told WFN designs remain stable if pushed to max. velocity.
Boolits lighter than 270 gr. seem to shoot pretty well.

I'm not sure Henry replaced the barrel on my BBB, the day I received it I called, but they had no clue.
Then he proceed to tell how to tell, told I already knew.
Just figured it might be something you would archive.
I swore then I'd never buy a damn thing from them again.
Actually I haven't even shot it more than a time or two.
Just stuck it in the back of the safe.
It's either 1:38, or 1:20 as it's all they offer.

Cimarron Model P, 5 1/2 " barrel in 44-40 is 1:20
Hick: Iron sights!
I have a 44 American with a 1:20", a few 44 Mag with 1:20", a couple of 44-40 with 1:36", 445 super mag with 1:20".
They all seem to do pretty good for what they are!!

From the list I can only choose 2 S&W 44 mags with 1:20 twist. For 44 caliber (.429") firearms, I also have two rifles with 1:16.5", two rifles with 1:20, and one with 1:38".
Winchester 94 Legacy. 24" Bbl, 1/20 twist. Shoots 310gr Cast with GC. Very accurate.
Poll doesn't permit multiple responses. I have no issues with slow twist Marlin Microgroove rifles firing plainbased cast bullets to 240 grains at velocities to 1400 feet per second. My Ruger M77/44 with 20-inch twist is accurate with 300-grain bullets subsonic. I believe my .44 revolvers are alsom20 inch twist and are accurate with bullets to 300 grains.

Outpost is correct.
My favourite is 1:20. Very accurate in 44 Magnum SBH(s) in a wide variety of bullet weights!

what about the 444 marlin? i use a tc encore in a 23" MGM barrel with a 1 in 20" twist.
i have a ruger sbh with a 1 in 20" too.
stubshaft, how’d you end up with microgroove rifling on a Winchester?
I just checked the manual for my FA 97 .44 Special which says the twist is 1/18
I almost forgot. The Browning B-92 in .44 Mag has 1:38

My old Spanish El Tigre from the 1920’s appears to have a twist around 1-38 to 1-40. It’s a bit tough to measure because my cleaning rod keeps slipping slightly. Regardless, it shoots well with 200 to 215 gr bullets - both jacketed or cast.
stubshaft, one of the benefits of being on a forum such as this is the wealth of information available. I certainly learned something about Winchester barrels. Now I’m curious if Marlin supplied barrels for a short period of time or Winchester manufactured them.
