A gun that old will have the action parts mated to each other
so they work together very well.

About a year and a half ago I bought a circa 1954 870 16 gauge 28” modified gun for a little of nothing . I worked on the wood a bit and put ten coats of Tung oil on it . Sold it and made a tidy profit .

Gun MFG's think CNC means it fits as designed and no need for handfitted craftsmenship. Of course that would raise the price and we as buyers would complain about the hi cost

I have my Fathers that he bought the first year they came out, ADL with the diamond pattern. Probably the reason I have a row of them now with one for every attitude or trip. They are smooth and slick after years of cared for use. That thing has many miles and hours and has dropped a truck bed of bird, Dad's is the one I grab for snipe and dove days. Plus it feels about half as heavy as a later Wingmaster or an Express blast finish banger! If you think you need one I seriously doubt you will regret it.

Yeah, I did grab it. Serial # says it was made in 1955. 12 gage, 28" mod. with a red bead. Will try some trap shooting with it out in Hawthorn, WI this summer.

Good find, and price. I think they are smoother than a Model 12 Win. JMO. You could have Rem Chokes put in it and have the most versatile shotgun ever.

The nice walnut really caught my fancy and the unique corncob fore end. The demographics in our country suggest that we should see more and more vintage firearms for sale. Saw too at the lgs a Howa Carbon Stalker in 7.62 x 39. Felt like it was filled with helium. $965 though. I do have a case of brass Yugo ammo that would pair up with it nicely.

Dad and Grandma bought Grandpa one like that for Christmas in 1955. Plain barrel and IIRC a silver (probably aluminum) bead. Grandpa liked to duck hunt with decoys, he killed a lot of ducks with that shotgun.
If you must have choke tubes, please buy an extra barrel to do it with.

Remington shotgun barrels were upgraded after a class action lawsuit. Better, stronger steel. Around 1997?

I actually witnessed one Remington barrel failure on the skeet field ack around the mid 80's. A young man brought new Remington 1100 in 20 gauge to a night shoot. We were on station 3 when I noticed as he shot there was a wink of light from his barrel. One of the other shooters noticed it also and we stopped him and took him and his gun to the lighted shed behind the skeet field. One of the men had a bore light and we took his barrel off and one of the men put his hand over the front end of the barrel while another put the bore light in the chamber end of the barrel. Sure enough you could see a very feint light in about a 6" middle section on one side of the barrel. He was advised to take the gun back to the gun store where he bought it and have it returned to Remington. He did and about 2 weeks later he came back to shoot and had a new barrel and a letter of apology from Remington. I was offered a new barrel by Remington on a recall but I had shot my barrel for hundreds of rounds with no trouble so I politely turned them down. My experience anyway, james
My 870 is also from 1955 and this picture is from the auction site I bought it from years ago.
I shot it with the original barrel with Cutts but then found an 878 VR skeet barrel for it and shot it that way for a few years (with no problems whatsoever), but finally found an 870 VR skeet barrel which it has on it now, and will stay that way.
FWIW, those are custom English walnut stocks with extensive fine checkering, and it cleaned up nicely from the condition shown in the picture.
I paid $200 for it as the high bidder of the auction.
